Women's experience of re-entry after humanitarian missions: Interpretative phenomenological analysis

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo prozkoumat zkušenost žen s návratem z humanitárních misí. Této oblasti není doposud věnována dostatečná pozornost, uskutečněný kvalitativní výzkum má tak explorativní charakter. Úvodní část se věnuje dosavadním výzkumným zjištěním v této oblasti a významným faktorům, které mají vliv na psychosociální fungování. Dále je obsažen přehled kvalitativních výzkumů, které se zaměřují na prožívání lidí s podobnou zkušeností, a shrnutý je i fenomenologický výzum humanitárních pracovníků po návratu z mise. Výzkumný soubor tvoří pět žen ve věku 30 až 45 let, které v minulosti pracovaly v rámci humanitárních misí. Metodou sběru dat byl polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Rozhovory byly analyzovány za pomoci interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Výsledkem jsou čtyři identifikovaná témata: „Já v kontextu ponávratového dění“, „Sociální izolace – Podpora a potvrzení“, „Zůstat nebo jít – Přijetí a odpuštění“, „Význam zkušenosti“. Možné interpretace v kontextu dosavadních zjištění, limity a možnosti dalšího výzkumu jsou obsahem diskuze.

Abstract:

The aim of the master thesis is to explore the experience of women with postmission reintegration, previously deployed in humanitarian aid context. This topic has not been thoroughly researched yet, the qualitative research has therefore an explorative character. The introductory part focuses on the present research findings in this area and important factors related to the psychosocial functioning. Further, it also involves a review of qualitative and phenomenological research about the experience of people with experience re–entry adjustment as well as phenomenological research of humanitarian aid workers. The research sample consists of five women between the age of 30 to 45, who had worked in intenational developmnet and humanitarian emergencies across the area of field work and management. The data collection method has been a semistructurized interview, analysed through the method of the interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results identified four main topics: „Me in the postmission context“, „Social isolation – Support and aknowlegedment“, „Stay or go – Acceptance and frogiveness“, „Meaning of the experience“. These topics are presented as results and are discussed in context of present findigs. Possible interpretations in the context of present research findings, limits of the research and future researchers possibilities all together form a discussion.
