Black Souls: Historical Anthropology of Childhood Based on Disciplinary Sources (School Books of Shame and Honour)

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je představit problematiku utváření normativu poslušného občana v českých zemích v devatenáctém a na počátku dvacátého století, s užším zaměřením na žáky základních škol. Na základě pramenné analýzy takzvaných černých a zlatých knih, které kantorům sloužily k zaznamenávání kázeňských přestupků a pochval žáků, je zkoumán jak vývoj disciplinárních technik, tak také samotný žák a jeho pozice ve škole a ve společnosti. To, jak byl ovlivňován svým okolím a autoritami, jaký na něj byl vyvíjen nátlak, a jaké jeho chování bylo ještě tolerováno a co už bylo považováno za přečin, který bylo nutné potrestat. Pozornost je však věnována také učitelům. Tomu, v jakém sociálním postavení se nacházeli a jak vystupovali vůči svým svěřencům, kterým se snažili nejen předávat vědomosti, ale také formovat jejich charakter a vést je ke kázni a dobrým mravům.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to introduce a problem of normative formation of the obedient citizen in Czech lands during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with a closer focus on elementary school pupils. The development of disciplinary techniques, as well as the pupils themselves and their position in school and society were studied with the help of source analysis from the so-called black and gold books, which served the cantors to record the pupils' disciplinary misconducts and praises. It is investigated how the pupil was influenced by his surroundings and authorities, how much pressure he was subjected to, and which his behaviour was still tolerated and what was considered as a crime that was necessary to punish. Attention is also paid to teachers. What social status belonged to teachers and how they behaved towards their students, for which they tried not only to transfer knowledge but also to shape their character and lead them to discipline and good morals.
