Attitudes of European Union citizens towards migrants in the context of social inclusion

Abstract:

Social inclusion is considered successful when its actors are successfully integrated into the society economically, socially and publicly. It is not a one-sided process, in which it is sufficient that the state is ready and willing to accept new citizens, but rather an interactive process joined both by migrants and inhabitants in each particular country. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to emphasise the significance of attitudes of citizens towards migrants in the process of social inclusion of migrants. Based on the analysis of available data from the EB 2007 and 2010 surveys, (Special Eurobarometer 273, Wave 66.3, European Social Reality and Standard Eurobarometer 71, Future of Europe), it is possible to talk about a sample of attitudes of the EU citizens towards migrants, particularly their tolerance, feelings of uncertainty, fear of loosing their jobs or hope related to the arrival of migrants. Additionally, an ambition of this thesis is to compare the differences in attitudes of former and new member states of the European Union. The interval between the surveys enabled the author to monitor the effects of global financial crisis on attitudes of EU citizens toward migrants.

Abstract:

Sociálna inklúzia je úspešná, ak sa jej aktérovi podarí úspešne integrovať do spoločnosti ekonomicky, sociálne aj spoločensky. Sociálna inklúzia nie je jednostranným procesom, v ktorom stačí aby bol iba štát pripravený a ochotný prijímať nových občanov. Inklúzia migrantov je interaktívnym procesom, na ktorom sa zúčastňujú migranti spolu s domácim obyvateľstvom. Cieľom tejto teoreticko-analytickej bakalárskej práce je upozorniť na význam postojov domáceho obyvateľstva voči migrantom pri procese sociálnej inklúzie migrantov. Na základe analýzy dostupných výsledkov už zrealizovaných výskumov v EB 2007 a 2010 (Special Eurobarometer 273, Wave 66.3, European Social Reality a Standard Eurobarometer 71, Future of Europe) je možné hovoriť o výseku sociálnej reality postojov obyvateľov voči migrantom, o ich tolerantnosti, pocitoch ohrozenia, obave zo straty pracovného miesta či nádeji spojenej s príchodom migrantov. Ambíciou práce je aj porovnať rozdiely v postojoch v pôvodných a nových členských krajinách Európskej Únie. Časový rozostup prieskumov umožnil autorovi sledovať dopady globálnej hospodárskej krízy na postoje občanov EU a ich vzťah k migrantom.
