Specific fears in the young adulthood period

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o problematice mladé dospělosti perspektivou specifických strachů. Klade si za cíl popsat strachy, které jsou pro toto období typické a hlouběji se zaměřit na dvě domény, které by měly být pro období třetího decénia obzvláště charakteristické a významné- oblast strachů spojených s partnerstvím a pracovní (a s nimi související studijní) strachy. Strachy a úzkosti jsou určitým vhledem do prožívaných problémů mladých lidí, zároveň odráží jejich současné motivy a cíle. Explorace jejich obsahu tak pomáhá popsat a pochopit, jakými tématy se dnešní mladí lidé zabývají, co je trápí a jaké cíle si kladou. K realizace cíle byly provedeny tři empirické studie. Cílem první studie byla explorace specifických strachů v období vynořující se dospělosti. Dílčím cílem je prověřit, zda kombinace škál FSS-II a FSSCII obsahově dostatečně pokrývá i aktuálně prožívané strachy v období vynořující se dospělosti prostřednictvím porovnání výsledků z volně generovaných výpovědí s výsledky získanými užitím sebeposuzovací škály. Byl stanoven předpoklad, že mladí lidé budou mezi subjektivně zažívanými strachy uvádět strachy související s hledáním kariéry, intimního vztahu a strachy spojené s ohrožením smyslu života a seberealizace. Dalším předpokladem bylo, že volné výpovědi budou obsahovat strachy, které stávající kombinace škál nezahrnuje. Internetově založené studie se zúčastnilo 642 respondentů, 162 mužů a 480 žen ve věku mezi 20 a 29 roky. Ve studii byly kombinovány dvě metody sběru dat – sebeposuzovací škály (kombinace škál FSSC-II a FSS-II) a volná výpověď. Z volných výpovědí bylo vytvořeno 16 kategorií mapujících obsahovou formu strachu. Bylo uvedeno deset nejintenzivnějších strachů v rámci sebeposuzovací škály. Položky v rámci škál byly na základě svého obsahu přiřazeny do obecných kategorií, vzešlých z kategorizace volných výpovědí. Na základě výsledků lze popsat strachy typické pro období vynořující se dospělosti. Jedná se zejména o strachy školní, strachy spojené se selháním, strachy o blízké, strachy spojené se zaměstnáním, strachy ze smrti, partnerské strachy, strachy z odmítnutí druhými lidmi, generalizované strachy a strachy z neznámého. Strachy, které byly detekovány prostřednictvím volných výpovědí, jsou obsahově specifické a zahrnují vlivy vnějšího prostředí a sociální kontext. Sebeposuzovací škála se pro dané vývojové období ukázala spíše jako obsahově nedostačující. Limitem studie bylo složení výzkumného souboru. Jednalo se o internetový soubor složený převážně ze studentů (80 %) a žen (74 %), což mohlo přispět například k vysokému zastoupení kategorie školních strachů v rámci studie. Cílem druhé studie bylo popsat partnerské strachy typické pro období mladé dospělosti a zjistit, zda existují faktory, které predikují výskyt a intenzitu partnerských strachů v tomto období. Vzorek tvořili mladí dospělí z longitudinálního projektu „Cesty do dospělosti“. Jednalo se o 407 respondentů, z toho 341 žen (81 %), průměrný věk souboru byl 23,53 let (SD = 1,48; Min = 18,7, Max = 33). Data byla získávána pomocí online dotazníků. Data byla kategorizována do sedmi kategorií za pomoci tematické analýzy (Strachy z rozchodu, ze samoty, z nenalezení partnera, z partnerských neshod, s pochybnostmi o sobě v partnerství, z nevěry a generalizované partnerské strachy). Regresní analýzy následně prokázaly vztah výskytu partnerských strachů s prožitkem rozchodu a úzkostnou vazbou k partnerovi. ý nepoměr mužů a žen, vysokoškoláků a pracujících a respondentů starší věkové skupiny. Dále použití metody volných výpovědí, k jejímž specifikum patřilo to, že partnerský strach uvedla polovina respondentů. Poslední studie si kladla za cíl prozkoumat možné faktory, které se vztahují k výskytu subjektivně prožívaných studijních a pracovních strachů v období mladé dospělosti. Vzorek tvořilo 303 respondentů z projektu „Cesty do dospělosti“ (83,8 % žen, průměrný věk = 24 let; Min = 19,08, Max = 32). Data byla získávána pomocí online dotazníků. Výpovědi o studijních a pracovních straších byly získávány metodou volných výpovědí. Dále byly administrovány tyto dotazníky- GIDS, The Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, CDSE-SF, Perception of Parental Autonomy-Support and Control Scale. Z výsledků regresní analýzy vyplývá, že existuje vztah mezi výskytem studijních strachů, akademického vědomí vlastní účinnosti, podporou autonomie ze strany otce, pohlavím a závazkem ke studiu. Dále byl detekován vztah mezi výskytem pracovních strachů a závazkem k práci, pociťovanou kontrolou ze strany otce, pracovním úvazkem a zaměstnáním, které souvisí s plánovanou profesí respondenta. Limitem studie je především velká převaha žen ve výzkumném souboru. Na základě první studie došlo k popisu strachů typických pro období mladé dospělosti. Byl také podpořen závěr, že jako vhodná metoda pro zjišťování výskytu strachů v tomto období je metoda volného generování strachů. Obsahově tyto strachy odrážejí významné úkoly- nalézt si vhodnou práci a smysluplný vztah. Ukázalo se tedy, že mladí lidé v období třetího decénia skutečně prožívají strachy související s vhodnou volbou kariéry a studia, s hledáním vhodného intimního vztahu a strachy spojené s ohrožením nebo nenalezením smyslu života a vhodné seberealizace. Cílem práce bylo popsat strachy, které jsou pro období třetího decénia typické. V souladu s literaturou zabývající se vývojovými úkoly v tomto období byly pak vybrány dvě domény, které by měly být pro toto období typické- partnerství a práce. Jak strachy partnerské tak též strachy spojené s profesní volbou byly popsány a byly též prozkoumány v širším kontextu. Uváděné partnerské strachy byly provázány spíše s negativními faktory (kromě pohlaví), zdá se, že výskyt partnerských strachů více reflektuje možné potíže s partnerskou oblastí spojené. Výskyt pracovních a studijních strachů reflektuje naopak vice motivace a cíle v daných oblastech a lze je vnímat jako pozitivní ukazatele normativnosti vývoje.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of young adulthood from the perspective of specific fears. It aims to describe the fears that are typical for this period and focus more deeply on the two domains that should be characteristic and significant for the young adulthood period - the fears associated with partnership and work (and also study) fears. Fears and anxiety are reflecting the problems experienced by young people, their current motives and goals. Three empirical studies have been realized to achieve this goal. The first study aims at exploring specific fears in the emerging adulthood period. Partial objective is to examine suitability of two selfrating scale-instruments FSSC-II and FSS-II used in combination for respondents in the period of emerging adulthood. It can be assumed that young people have subjectively perceived fears associated with finding a career, intimate relationship and self-realization. It can be assumed that openended answers include fears that the current combination of scales does not. The total sample (internet based) size and gender structure: 642 respondents (162 males, 480 females). The sample age ranged between 20 and 29 years. The study combines two methods of data collection: self-rating scales (combination of FSSC-II and FSS-II) and openended questions on fears. The open-ended answers were categorized into 16 general categories. The order of ten most intense fears from self-rating scale was presented. Items within scales were based on its contents assigned to general categories, from open-ended answers. Based on the results, it is possible to describe some most specific fears typical for the period of emerging adulthood. These include school fears, fears of failure, fears for close ones, employment related fears, death related fears, partnership fears and next. The fears identified through open-ended answers appear to be content-specific and include also effects of the social contexts. The self-rating scales applied in the survey has proved to be insufficient. Limits. The study impact is limited by sample structure. The fact that the sample was over-represented by students (80%) and women (70%) might have contributed to higher proportion of school fears in this study. The second study aims at describing partnership fears in the young adulthood period and to examine the relationship between some factors (age, gender, attachment, break up, relationship with partner) and presence and intensity of partnership fears. Study was based on data from the longitudinal project „Cesty do dospělosti". Overall, this study was participated in by 407 respondents, 341 women (81%), the average age of the respondents was 23.53 years (SD = 1,48; Min = 18,7, Max = 33). Questionnaires were collected on-line. The open-ended answers were categorized by using thematic analysis, into 7categories (Fear of breaking up, of remaining alone, of not finding a partner, of partners disagreements, fears associated with a sense of their own incompetence in partnership, of infidelity and generalized partnership fears). Multiple regression analysis indicated that the anxious attachment dimension to the partner and the experience of break up were found to be significant predictors of presence of partnership fears. The gender, the existence of partnership and anxious attachment dimension to the partner were found to be significant predictors of intensity of partnership fears. The study impact is limited by sample structure. The sample was over-represented by women, students and respondents of older age group. Furthermore, the use of method of the free generation of fears, which included the fact that half of the respondents, reported partnership fear. The last study aims at examine the relationship between some factors (gender, self- efficacy, relationship with parents and identity development) and presence of school and employment related fears in the young adulthood period. Abstract:

The study used self- rating scales (GIDS, The Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, CDSE-SF, Perception of Parental Autonomy-Support and Control Scale.). The school fears and the employment related fears were collected by open - ended questions on fears. The open-ended answers on fears were categorized into general categories, the school fears were second most frequented category and the employment related fears were the fifth most frequented category. Regression analysis indicated that the gender, academic self-efficacy, perception of fathers’ autonomy support and commitment to study were found to be significant predictors of presence of school fears. Perception of fathers’ control, having the employment (specially related to future profession) and commitment to job were found to be significant predictors of presence of employment related fears. The results reveal that the presence of school fears was more related to the perception and evaluation of one's own learning abilities- self-efficacy and commitment to study. The presence of employment related fears was more related to the work experience- it was the strongest predictor. In terms of work experience, the most important influence was the experience of employment, which was related to future profession. Perception and evaluation of one's own abilities did not have a significant effect on the presence of employment related fears. Interesting was the relationship between perceived fathers autonomy support and control and the categories of fears. Higher autonomy support from the father has increased the chance of presence of school fears. It may be explained by higher perceived responsibility for study and the fear of disappointing parents. Higher autonomy control from the father reduced the chance of presence of employment related fears, which can be explained by the reduced responsibility for work decisions and the overall lower motivation to explore the employment area. Based on results, it is possible to better understand the context of school and employment related fears – the identified findings are fully consistent with the developmental challenges and characteristics of the young adulthood period. The study impact is limited by sample structure. The sample was over-represented by women, students and respondents of older age group. The aim of this thesis was to describe the fears that are typical for the period of young adulthood. Based on the first study, the fears typical of the young adulthood period were described. It was also supported that open-ended question on fears is the appropriate method for detecting the occurrence of fear in this period. Two domains were selected that should be typical for this period - partnership and work. Both- partnership fears and employment related fears have been described and have also been explored in a wider context. The partnership fears were more likely to be linked to negative factors (except for gender), and the existence of partnership fears seems to reflect more the possible difficulties associated with the partnerships area. Existence of employment related fears and study fears, reflects more motivation and goals in given areas and can be perceived as positive indicators of realizing development tasks.
