Abstract:

Technický obraz na malířských štaflích. Česko-němečtí fotoamatéři a umělecká fotografie, 1890–1914. Tématem disertační práce je dosud nepříliš sledovaná oblast vizuální kultury, která je navíc průnikem hned tří poměrně komplexních tématických okruhů: prvním z nich je regionální produkce umělecky orientované fotografie kolem roku 1900 (Kunstphotographie), druhým je téma soudobé organizované amatérské fotografie a třetím česko-německý autorský okruh. Vzhledem k rozsahu celé této oblasti vizuální kultury bylo nezbytné zúžit sledovaný okruh a předmětem práce se tak nakonec staly čtyři kluby: teplický Klub der Amateurphotographen, dále Club deutscher Amateurphotographen in Prag, Klub der Amateur-Photographen in Budweis a Camera-Club v Brně. Vlastní práce je rozdělena na čtyři části: první dvě přibližují velmi rozsáhlé a relativně autonomní tématické okruhy amatérské fotografie a uměleckých snah ve fotografii obecně v druhé polovině 19. století. Třetí kapitola sleduje na konkrétních příkladech čtyř výše jmenovaných spolků zdejší dění na poli amatérské a umělecké fotografie kolem roku 1900. Kromě základní faktografie je zde věnována pozornost také komplexním vazbám mezi jednotlivými kluby a dalšími spolky, institucemi nebo čelními představiteli umělecko-fotografického hnutí; v případ brněnského Kameraklubu je například sledována úzká spolupráce se zdejším Mährisches Gewerbe-Museum v čele s Juliem Leischingem, dále s Mährischer Kunstverein nebo s umělci Carlem M. Thumou a členem Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs – Wiener Secession, Antonem Nowakem. Čtvrtá závěrečná část se soustředí na vizuální a institucionální vazby mezi uměleckou fotografií a soudobou malířskou, případně grafickou produkcí, a to nejen v rovině tématické či kompoziční blízkosti prací z jednotlivých oblastí, nýbrž i vazbám v širším společenském kontextu. Práce je založena na detailním průzkumu archivního a primárního fotografického materiálu z celé řady domácích i zahraničních fotografických sbírek a fondů. Neméně důležitý pramen v tomto případě představují také specializovaná dobová fotografická periodika. Těžištěm celé práce je argument, že umělecky orientovaná fotografie přelomu 19. a 20. století byla velmi významně podmíněna sociálními vazbami, byla značně elitářská a navzdory mnoha protichůdným tvrzením přejímala v první řadě tradiční schémata a snažila se vměstnat do ustálených umělecko-teoretických kategorií. Zároveň se snažím ukázat, že vztahy mezi uměleckou fotografií a soudobou malbou či grafikou nebyly jednostranné a že umělecko-fotografické hnutí, i vzhledem k tomu, že fotografické médium jako takové se stalo v průběhu druhé poloviny 19. století neoddělitelnou součástí tvůrčího procesu ve většině uměleckých oblastí, je v mnoha případech relevantním interpretačním prostředkem také v rámci malby a grafiky.

Abstract:

“Technical Image on a Painter’s Easel : Czech-German photo-amateurs and art photography. 1890—1914” The dissertation deals with an intersection point of three—until recently rather omitted and disconnected—fields of visual culture: firstly, local artistically oriented production of photography around 1900, secondly, organised amateur-photography, and finally, Czech-German photographers. Considering the great number of local clubs as well as their members, the final number of thoroughly researched localities within the thesis had to be narrowed. Finally, the dissertation brings into focus four of them, namely the club from Teplice (Klub deutscher Amateurphotographen in Teplitz), Prague (Club deutscher Amateurphotographen in Prag), České Budějovice (Amateurphotographen–Verein in Budweis) and Brno (Brünner Camera–Club). The thesis comprises four parts: the first and the second outline rather complex themes of amateur photography and artistically ambitious photography since 1840s till 1910s, in general. The third part concentrates on specific situation of four above mentioned clubs of photo-amateurs at the turn of the 19th century and describes complex relations between them and prominent exponents of the (Central-)European-art photography movement and other local art-related institutions, organisations or individuals; i.e. in Brno for example co-operation between the Brünner Camera-Club and the Mährischer Kunstverein, the Mährisches Gewerbe–Museum, the artists Carl Maria Thuma and Anton Nowak, the member of the Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs – Wiener Secession. The last part of the thesis focuses on visual and institutional relations between period art photography, and graphics and paintings; not only in association with their evident topical or compositional inspiration, but also in a wider social context. The thesis is based on deep research into local archives, on materials held in various collections of photography in the Czech Republic or abroad, and particularly on information available from specialised photography magazines of the period in combination with the visual culture approach. In addition to a number of specific findings in the context of individual clubs, the main rather general argument of my doctoral thesis is that organised and artistically oriented amateur photography around 1900 was strongly socially conditioned, elitist and despite many manifestations of an effort to break the general elitist rules—especially in the context of the art photography theory—eventually adopting traditional patterns and in fact trying to squeeze in the classical art categories. In addition to that, I also argue that relations between art photography and painting or graphics were greatly mutual and that the art photography movement, since the medium as a whole became an indispensable part of artistic process during the second half of the 19th century, may serve as a clue to interpretations of other fields of art of the period.
