The roots of polynomials

Abstract:

Téma kořenů polynomů je poměrně široké a existuje velké množství matematických definic a vět, které se jím zabývají. Cílem této práce je základním způsobem představit tři přístupy ve studiu kořenů polynomů jedné proměnné s reálnými koeficienty. Nejdříve si vyjádříme kořeny polynomů nízkých stupňů jako řešení příslušných polynomiálních rovnic, a potom se budeme zabývat vlastnostmi kořenů polynomů obecného stupně. Ukážeme si, jak lze zjistit informace o počtu reálných kořenů v nějakém intervalu a určit meze absolutní hodnoty všech kořenů. Také si zobecníme známý diskriminant kvadratického polynomu pro polynomy obecného stupně, ukážeme si, co nám jeho znaménko říká o rozdělení kořenů mezi reálné a komplexní nereálné, a jak lze diskriminant vypočítat s využitím koeficientů polynomu pomocí tzv. rezultantu.

Abstract:

The topic of the roots of polynomials is quite broad and there are a lot of mathematical definitions and theorems dealing with it. The aim of this thesis is to present three approaches in studying the roots of one-variable polynomials with real coefficients. We will first express the roots of low-degree polynomials as solutions of the corresponding polynomial equations, and then we will study some properties of the roots of polynomials of general degree. We will show how to find information about the number of real roots in an interval and determine the limits of the absolute value of all roots. We will also generalize the known quadratic polynomial discriminant for polynomials of general degree, show what its sign tells us about the distribution of roots between real and complex unreal, and how the discriminant can be calculated using the coefficients of the polynomial and the so-called resultant.
