The Inner Cultivation in the Daoist Texts, the Guanzi and the Xiang'er Commentary: the Comparison of the Chosen Terms

Abstract:

Ohledně taoismu panují různá klišé. Jedním z nich je rozdělení na "filosofický" a "náboženský" taoismus, což je výtvorem moderních badatelů. "Filosofický" taoismus se vztahuje k obsahu díla Laozi a několika podobných filosofických textů, "náboženský" taoismus se vztahuje k taoistickým kultům, které vznikly v Číně v období dynastie Han. Někteří západní badatelé považují "náboženský" taoismus za úpadek "filosofického" taoismu. Některé ideje jsou však podobné v obou z nich. Komparace vybraných pojmů vnitřní kultivace z taoistických textů Guanzi, které representují taoismus "filosofický" a z komentáře Xiang'er, který zastupuje ten "náboženský", v mé práci objasní, že toto rozdělení není bezchybné. Taoistické texty z Guanzi znamenají nejstarší známý pramen o taoistické vnitřní kultivaci a jsou také starší než Daodejing, který je často považován za zdroj "filosofického" taoismu. Komentář Xiang'er je jedním z nejdůležitějších textů taoistického náboženského hnutí, "Cesta nebeských mistrů", které se stalo první organizovanou podobou taoismu a které je v mé práci také blíže popsáno. Některé ideje, jako dosažení zdraví nebo mudrctví, najdeme v obou textech, jak náboženského, tak filosofického typu. To dokazuje, že tzv. náboženský taoismus není degenerací "původního" filosofického, protože podobné ideje, přisuzované zejména náboženským formám taoismu, jsou obsaženy také ve starých taoistických textech, jako těch z Guanzi.

Abstract:

About Daoism there exist various clichés. One of them is the distinction between "philosophical" and "religious" Daoism which is the creation of the modern scholars. "Philosophical" Daoism refers to the contents of the Laozi and a few similar philosophical texts, "religious" Daoism refers to the Daoist cults which arose in China during the Han dynasty. Some western scholars consider the "religious" Daoism as a sort of degeneration of the "philosophical" Daoism. But some ideas are very similar in both of them. The comparison of chosen terms of the inner cultivation of the Daoist texts of Guanzi which represent the "philosophical" Daoism and of the Xiang'er commentary which represents the "religious" one, make in my work clear, that this distinction is not accurate. The Daoist texts of Guanzi represent the oldest known source about the Daoist inner cultivation and they are older than Daodejing who is often takes as the source of "philosophical" Daoism. The Xiang'er commentary is one of the most important texts of the Daoist religious movement, "The Way of Celestial Masters", who became the first organized form of Daoism and who is also specify in my work. Some ideas like achievement the health or the sageship we find in both of texts, religious as well as philosophical type. This evidences that the so call religious Daoism is not the degeneration of "original" philosophical, because similar ideas attributed primarily to religious forms of Daoism are content also in old Daoist texts like these of Guanzi.
