The impact of exposure to sexual content and sexting on adolescents’ well-being

Abstract:

Expozice sexuálně explicitním materiálům, tedy obsahům s neskrývanou nahotou či vyobrazením sexu, a sexting, tedy posílání a přijímání zpráv s takovým obsahem, patří k poměrně rozšířeným aktivitám mezi adolescenty. Současný výzkum jejich dopadů na well-being se ale často zaobývá ne/přítomností negativních účinků, a opomíjí potenciální pozitivní dopady. Tato dizertace se, optikou teoretického přístupu the Integrative Model of Media Effects on Adolescents‘ Well-being (tzv. iMEW), zabývá dopady expozice sexuálnímu obsahu a sextingu na well-being adolescentů. Téma je zkoumáno prostřednictvím čtyř studií s různými designy (průřezový, longitudinální, intenzivní longitudinální sběr). Studie 1 a 2 se soustředí na krátkodobé dopady sexuálního obsahu a sextingu na psychologický well-being. Longitudinální Studie 3 se zabývá dopady konsensuálního sextingu na dlouhodobý sociální well-being. Studie 4 prezentuje inovativní způsob studia souvislosti používání smartphone aplikací a sexuální expozice, a to prostřednictvím kombinace intenzivního sběru dat a tzv. objektivních dat ze smartphonu. Obecně zjištění ukazují, že jak sexuální expozice, tak sexting mohou mít pozitivní a negativní důsledky, které různě souvisí s individuálními proměnnými.

Abstract:

Exposure to sexually explicit materials and sexting are common activities among adolescents. Current research on links of exposure and sexting to adolescents' well-being often focuses on the presence and absence of negative effects and overlooks the potential for positive impact. Using the Integrative Model of Media Effects on Adolescents’ Well-being, this dissertation explores the relation of individual characteristics to adolescent sexual exposure and sexting and examines their positive and negative impact on adolescents’ well-being using a range of methodological approaches (cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experience sampling designs) in four studies. Studies 1 and 2 focus on the relationship between media use and short-term psychological well-being, being among the first to present robust results of the impact of sexual exposure and sexting on feeling happy and upset after these behaviors. The two studies utilize a between-person cross-sectional design to examine individual factors associated with adolescent exposure to sexually explicit materials and subsequent feelings in nine European countries (Study 1) and sexting in Czechia (Study 2). Study 3 uses a longitudinal design to explore the within-person processes between sexting and long-term social well-being. Study 4 presents an innovative approach to studying the relationship between media use and exposure to sexually explicit materials. It shows how smartphone app use and sexual exposure can be studied through the combination of intense sampling (i.e., ecological momentary assessment, EMA) and trace data (i.e., objective data about smartphone use collected unobtrusively and continuously from participants’ smartphones). The results show that sexual exposure and sexting may have positive and negative outcomes that seem to be differentially associated with individual susceptibility variables.
