Victorian Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell - Fiction or Reality.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to make a deep analysis of the novel Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell and on the basis of this analysis and interpretation she would show in which ways the characters, their acts, habits, opinions and language represent the Victorian period. The analysis will not only concentrate on the female protagonist, their human rights and position in the society but also it will deal with the whole Cranford society and it will explore how they see themeselves. Another goal of this diploma thesis is to find the proof or disproof for Charles Kinsley´s statement that the literature of every nation is its autobiography.

Abstract:

Cílem práce diplomantky je provést hlubší analýzu románu Cranford od Elizabeth Gaskell a na základě této podrobné analýzy a interpretace tohoto díla prokázat, jakým způsobem postavy, jejich zvyky, jazyk a názory aj. reprezentují viktoriánskou dobu. Diplomantka vyjde z analýzy postav a zaměří se na třídní rozdíly ve společnosti, převážně však na ženské postavy a poukáže na postavení žen na viktoriánském maloměstě a jejich možnosti uplatnění v tomto prostředí. Diplomantka také bude hledat důkazy pro vyjádření souhlasu s tvrzením Charlese Kingsleyho, že literatura je autobiografii každého národa, popř. jeho vyvrácení.
