Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá indiánskými internátními školami založenými v 19. století s cílem asimilovat původní americké obyvatelstvo do "civilizované" americké společnosti. První část zkoumá vznik této politiky, rozvoj vzdělávacích institucí a začátky internátního školského systému. Jádro práce se zabývá metodami používanými v těchto institucích a zkoumá okamžité a dlouhodobé negativní dopady, které měly na původní obyvatele. Tvrdí, že přístup školních důstojníků nebral v úvahu kulturní šok a způsobil tak velké emocionální rozrušení. Osobní svědectví bývalých indiánských studentů byly použity na podporu tohoto tvrzení. Poslední část práce je věnována indiánskému odporu a zkoumá jeho význam a dopad jaký resistence měla na budoucnost celé rasy. Hlavním cílem práce je zvýšit povědomí o této problematice, a zjistit, zda asimilační cíle byly splněny, či nikoliv. Moje zjištění naznačují, že plné asimilace nebylo nikdy dosaženo, ale že internátní školy dokázaly výrazně změnit tradiční indiánský život.

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with the 19th century Indian boarding schools that were designed to assimilate Native Americans into “civilized” American society. The first part explores the policy formation, the development of educational institutions and the beginnings of the boarding school system. The core of the thesis deals with the methods used at these institutions and examines both immediate and long-term negative impacts they had on Native Americans. It argues that the approach of the school officers disregarded the culture shock and caused a great emotional distress. Personal testimonies of former Native American students were used to support the claim. The last part of the thesis is devoted to Indian resistance and examines its importance and the impact it had on the future of the whole race. The main aim of the thesis is to raise awareness to the issue and to find out whether the assimilative goals were accomplished or not. My findings suggest that the full assimilation was never accomplished, but that the boarding schools still managed to greatly alter the traditional Native American life.
