Psychology of decision making: Effect of learning, end-effect, cheap talk, and other variables influencing decision making in the Prisoner’s Dilemma game

Abstract:

V experimentech s Vězňovým dilematem jsme potvrdili, že míra spolupráce v jednokolových hrách je nižší než ve vícekolových hrách. Na druhou stranu jsme zjistili, že v posledním tahu vícekolové hry s předem známým koncem spolupracují lidé méně než v jednokolových hrách. Potvrdili jsme existenci "efektu konce hry", přičemž jsme zároveň doložili, že k němu dochází až během několika posledních tahů. Zjistili jsme, že tento efekt ovlivňuje jak samotná rozhodnutí během hry, tak očekávání subjektů ohledně budoucích rozhodnutí jich samých i jejich protihráčů. Částečně jsme potvrdili hypotézu o existenci efektu učení v opětovných setkáních s určitými strategiemi ve Vězňově dilematu. Doložili jsme, že nezávazná komunikace ze strany protihráčů ("cheap talk") zvyšuje ochotu subjektů spolupracovat i subjekty očekávanou ochotu spolupracovat na straně jejich protihráčů. Zjistili jsme, že přátelskost a tolerance vůči neurčitosti souvisí s vyšší kooperativností subjektů. V teoretické části práce jsme rozebrali důležité příspěvky k teorii rozhodování: klasickou teorii užitku, teorii omezené racionality, prospektovou teorii, heuristické rozhodování a teorii her.

Abstract:

In our experiments with Prisoner's Dilemma game we confirmed that the amount of cooperation in singe-trial games was lower than in iterated games. On the other hand, we found that on the last move of an iterated game with known terminating point, people cooperate less than in single-trial games. We confirmed the existence of end-game effect, we also specified that it occurs only in the very last moves of finite iterated games, and that it influences actual decision making in the game, as well as subjects' expectations about their own and their opponents' prospective decisions. We partially supported the hypothesis of an effect of learning in repeated encounters with certain strategies in the Prisoner's Dilemma game. We confirmed that nonbinding communication (cheap talk) on their opponents' part tends to enhance subjects' willingness to cooperate and their expectations about their opponents' willingness to cooperate. We found that friendliness and tolerance for ambiguity may enhance cooperativeness of subjects. In theoretical part of my thesis I discussed important contributions to decision making theory: classical utility theory, bounded rationality theory, prospect theory, heuristics and biases approach, and theory of games.
