Max Planck's Philosophical Reflections during the Transition from Classical to Modern Physics

Abstract:

Záměrem dizertační práce je představit jednoho z dosud nejznámějších fyziků nové doby Maxe Plancka především jako filozofa. Filozofa, jehož názorové hledisko bylo výrazně ovlivněno klasickou fyzikou, a jenž byl proto nucen, vypořádat se v rámci nově objevených zákonů se zcela novým pohledem na svět. Filozofa, jehož smýšlení bylo konfrontováno s filozofickými idejemi logického pozitivismu, směru, jenž v Planckově době získával na stále větším významu. Cílem však je též představení Plancka jako fyzika, filozofa i člověka, jenž byl vlivem historických zvratů v jeho době nucen přestát obě světové války. Fyzika, jenž během těchto světových tragédií reprezentoval absolutní vědeckou špičku a byl proto nucen zaujmout stanovisko i v rámci této své oficiální vedoucí pozice. Člověka, jenž zažil i nejhorší z možných osobních tragédií, jemuž postupně zemřela první žena a čtyři z pěti dětí. Člověka, jemuž snad nikdy nedovolila podvolit se tomuto hrůznému osudu jeho neochvějná víra v boha. První část práce se tak v rámci kapitoly "Planckovy životní milníky a filozofické stimuly" zabývá Planckovým životem v kontextu historických i osobních zvratů. Dále je analyzováno jeho vnímání kauzality i determinismu. V rámci jeho námitek vůči pozitivismu je představen Planckův "fyzikální světoobraz". Práce dále ozřejmuje i Planckův svébytný vztah k náboženství. Analyzování je i Planckovo smýšlení o svobodné vůli. Druhá část práce je překladem souboru následujících čtyř Planckových přednášek z originálu německého jazyka do českého jazyka: o Die Einheit des physikalischen Weltbildes o Das Weltbild ner neuen Physik von Max Planck. Vortrag gehalten 1929 an der Universität Leiden. o Der Kausalbegriff in der Physik von Max Planck. o Die Physik im Kampf um die Weltanschauung Vortrag gehalten am 6. März 1935 im Harnack - Haus Berlin - Dahlem von Dr. Max Planck Professor der theoretischen Physik an der Universität Berlin, Präsident der Kaiser - Wilhelm Gesellschaft, zur Förderung der Wissenschaften. Cílem je přiblížit Planckovy filozofické ideje české odborné veřejnosti. Právě tyto jeho čtyři přednášky byly pro překlad citlivě vybrány především vzhledem k současné totální absenci českých překladů Planckových filozofických přednášek, a jejich klíčová témata tak stojí spíše na pomezí fyziky a filozofie, kdy jejich význam je skutečně přinejmenším v určitých částech spíše fyzikální. Tyto první české překlady jeho filozoficko-fyzikálních přednášek nabízejí znalcům Planckovy primární role, tedy Plancka v pozici fyzika, jakýsi oslí můstek, jenž by snad mohl napomoct v přiblížení Plancka v jeho "nové" roli, v roli filozofa či alespoň filozofujícího fyzika.

Abstract:

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to present one of the most famous physicists of the modern age, Max Planck, primarily as a philosopher. A philosopher whose point of view was considerably influenced by classical physics and who was therefore forced, within the framework of newly discovered principles, to cope with a completely new view of the world. A philosopher whose opinions were confronted with the philosophical ideas of logical positivism, a philosophical view which gained increasingly more significance in Plank's time. Another objective is to portray Planck as a physicist as well as a man who, due to historical turns of events during his life, had to go through both the world wars. A physicist who, during these world disasters, typified the scientific elite and was therefore obliged to adopt a stand even within the framework of his official main role. A man who experienced the worst of possible personal tragedies: gradually losing his first wife and four of his five children. A man whose unshakeable faith in God perhaps never let him surrender to his horrifying destiny. Considering the above, the first part of the work, in the chapter called "Planck's Life's Milestones and Philosophical Stimuli", deals with Planck's lifetime in the context of great historical as well as personal changes. Furthermore, the thesis analyzes his perception of causality and determinism. Within the framework of his objections to positivism, the thesis presents Planck's "physical world view". The work also clarifies Planck's distinctive relationship to religion and provides an analysis of Planck's opinion on free will. The second part of the work is a translation of the following four of Planck's papers from the German original into the Czech language: o Die Einheit des physikalischen Weltbildes o Das Weltbild ner neuen Physik von Max Planck. o Der Kausalbegriff in der Physik von Max Planck. o Die Physik im Kampf um die Weltanschauung The overall objective is to provide the Czech professional public with an insight into Planck's philosophical ideas. These four papers were carefully selected for the translation, primarily with regard to the current complete absence of Czech translations of Planck's philosophical papers. The key topics of these papers remain rather on the boundary between physics and philosophy, as their focus is, at least in certain sections, primarily physical. These first Czech translations of Planck's philosophical-physical papers are intended to serve those already familiar with Planck's primary role, namely Planck as a physicist, as a kind of "pons asinorum", which might be helpful in characterizing Planck in his "new" role, i.e. in the role of a philosopher or, at least, a philosophizing physicist.
