Reflection of historical events in German-language literature using the example of the novel Am Shorter End of Sonnenallee by Thomas Brussig

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with life in the GDR at the time of the Berlin Wall in the 1980s. The objective was to analyse the novel At the Shorter End of Sonnenallee by Thomas Brussig, in which the protagonist, together with his friends and family, is confronted with precisely this life situation, life in the socialist GDR. The analysis was based on a thorough reading of the novel itself, as well as secondary literature that served as evidence of the events taking place in the novel. In addition, the secondary literature helped to navigate the many abbreviations that are very typical of the vocabulary of the GDR. The result or conclusion of this work is that one could hardly escape the system that prevailed in the GDR. The socialist regime affected family life, education and leisure. Lastly, the satirical presentation of the story on the part of the author is to be appreciated, which is much more appealing and understandable to the reader.

Abstract:

Diese Bachelorarbeit befasst sich mit dem Leben in der DDR zur Zeit der Berliner Mauer in den 1980er Jahren. Die Zielsetzung bestand darin, den Roman Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee von Thomas Brussig zu analysieren, in dem der Protagonist zusammen mit seinen Freunden und seiner Familie mit genau dieser Lebenssituation, dem Leben in der sozialistischen DDR, konfrontiert ist. Die Analyse stützte sich auf eine gründliche Lektüre des Romans selbst sowie auf Sekundärliteratur, die zum Nachweis der im Roman stattfindenden Ereignisse diente. Außerdem trug die Sekundärliteratur dazu bei, sich in den vielen Abkürzungen zurechtzufinden, die für den Wortschatz der DDR sehr typisch sind. Das Ergebnis oder die Schlussfolgerung dieser Arbeit ist, dass man dem in der DDR herrschendem System kaum entkommen konnte. Das sozialistische Regime wirkte sich auf Familienleben, Bildung und Freizeit aus. Schließlich ist die satirische Darstellung der Geschichte seitens des Autors zu schätzen, die für den Leser viel ansprechender und verständlicher ist.
