Abstract:

Tématem předkládané disertační práce je vizuální reprezentace dat. Práce vychází ze studia literárních pramenů a praktických zkušeností ve zkoumané oblasti. Zabývá se metodami vizualizace zejména vícerozměrných dat, přináší jejich charakteristiku, analýzu a objektivní zhodnocení. Věnuje se interakčním technikám a vícerozměrným metodám, které se v souvislosti s vizualizací používají. V disertační práci je navržena klasifikace vizualizačních technik vycházející z prostudované odborné literatury a reflektující zjištěné problémy stávajících klasifikačních schémat. Práce se dále věnuje vizualizačním softwarovým systémům volně dostupným na internetu a obsahuje přehled a popis vybraných aktuálních vizualizačních softwarů. Zabývá se i knihovnami statistického jazyka R, které obsahují vizualizační nástroje, mapuje vizualizační techniky v nich implementované a analyzuje jejich vlastnosti a možnosti využití. Jedním z původních výsledků práce je návrh modifikace a rozšíření systému rovnoběžných souřadnic – metoda „parviol“ (Parallel Coordinates and Violin Plot). Tato metoda kombinuje rovnoběžné souřadnice s houslovými grafy. Součástí disertace jsou i dvě nově naprogramované knihovny jazyka R. Knihovna symbols implementuje vybrané symbolové grafy (profily, sloupce, hvězdičkové, sluníčkové a polygonové grafy, Chernoffovy tváře, Stick Figures a Color Icons). Knihovně parviol implementuje nově navrženou vizualizační techniku parviol. Obě knihovny byly přijaty do Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). Nově naprogramované techniky i metody implementované v původních knihovnách nebo vizualizačním softwaru jsou v práci demonstrovány pomocí konkrétních příkladů, jsou objektivně analyzovány a kriticky zhodnoceny. Výsledkem analýzy je sumarizace vlastností, výhod a nedostatků jednotlivých metod a vyplývají z ní doporučení pro volbu vhodné množiny vizualizačních technik a softwarových prostředků pro konkrétní řešenou úlohu a zpracovávaná data.

Abstract:

The subject of the doctoral thesis is visual representation of data. The thesis is based on the study of theoretical materials (scientific papers, published scientific articles, Internet references etc.) and on practical experience of a long term research into the given field. The paper deals with the visualization methods, particularly with the methods of multidimensional visualization presenting its characteristic features, analysis and evaluation. The thesis attends to the interactive techniques and multidimensional methods that are usually used for the purpose of visualization. The dissertation presents the proposal for the classification of visualization techniques coming from the studied scientific papers and reflecting the lack of the existing classification schemes. The paper deals with the visualization software systems readily accessible on the Internet and includes the review and description of certain state-of-the-art software systems. The thesis also deals with the R language packages that include visualization tools, maps the visualization techniques and analyzes the qualities and utilization. One of the original outcomes of the paper is a concept of parallel coordinates system modification using the “parviol” method (Parallel Coordinates and Violin Plot) that combines parallel coordinates and violin plots. Integral part of the study are two newly programmed packages of the R project. The package symbols implements the selected symbol plots (profiles, bars, stars, suns, polygons, Chernoff faces, Stick Figures and Color Icons). The package parviol implements a new visualization technique called parviol. Both of these packages were accepted into CRAN (Comprehensive R Archive Network). The newly programmed techniques and methods implemented in current packages or visualization software are demonstrated on specific examples. Consequently, they are objectively analyzed and evaluated. The result of the analysis is a summary of the qualities, advantages and disadvantages of single methods and recommendations for the selection of suitable visualization techniques group and software tools for a specific task and for the analyzed data.
