The theory of Clash of Civilizations and the Reality of Today. Case study - Fault Line Conflict on the borders of Islam

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá teorií střetu civilizací Samuela Huntingtona. Cílem je posoudit, zda je tato teorie platná i po více než dvaceti letech od svého vydání. V teoretické části je tato teorie podrobně rozebrána, a to i z pohledu její kvality a použitelnosti s využitím názorů kritiků Huntingtonovy práce a oborníků z oblasti kultury nebo mezinárodních vztahů. Praktickou částí je případová studie, ve které je teorie aplikována na konflikt v Sýrii. Střet v Sýrii je nejdříve analyzován z hlediska vývoje konfliktu, aktérů, významu náboženství a civilizací a následně jsou znaky civilizačních střetů z teorie použity jako kritéria pro zhodnocení, zda syrská válka odpovídá střetům civilizací, jak je charakterizuje Huntington. Přínosem této práce je posouzení použitelnosti Huntingtonovy teorie v současnosti a také doplnění Huntingtonova civilizačního pohledu do diskuze o příčinách a možnostech ukončení války v Sýrii.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the theory of Clash of Civilizations from Samuel Huntington. The main purpose of this thesis is to find out, whether the theory remains valid more than twenty years after its publication or not. The theoretical part consists of a detailed analysis of this theory in the terms of quality and applicability according to some critics of Huntington’s work and culture or international relations specialists. The practical application of this theory is a case study, where the theory is implemented on the Syrian conflict. First, the Syrian conflict is being analyzed regarding its evolution, actors, the role of religion and civilizations. Afterwards, the characteristics of civilizational clashes serve as criteria to evaluate, whether the Syrian war corresponds to the clashes of civilizations as defined by Huntington. The contribution of this thesis is the examination of usability of Huntington’s theory today as well as adding Huntington’s point of view to the debate on the causes and the possible means to put an end to the Syrian war.
