Grain-size analysis of bed sediments of the Velká Hanzlůvka Stream

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with grain-size analysis of bed sediments of the Velká Hanzlůvka Stream situated in the Vsetínske vrchy mountains. The macrogranulometric analysis according to Wolman (1954) was used as the main tool for obtaining information about the grain size distribution of the sediments. Attention is paid mainly to the effect of the check dams on the grain size of the bed sediments. For this purpose, the grain sizes in managed stream were evaluated at 15 locations which was divided according to their position relative to the check dams (upstream, downstream and intermediate). The grain-size analysis was also conducted at 6 locations situated in the unmanaged channel for comparison with unaffected stream. The results revealed an obvious change in downstream trend in grain sizes betwen unmanaged and managed channel. There was no remarkable trend in the unmanaged stream, whereas in the managed stream there was observed significant downstream coarsening, which was attributed to the increasing transport capacity of the stream due to the decrease in the sediment transport connectivity induced by check dams. A general trend predicting the relative fining of sediments upstream of check dams and coarsening downstream of check dams was also observed here.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá zrnitostnou analýzou korytových sedimentov bystrinného toku Veľká Hanzlůvka vo Vsetínskych vrchoch. Ako hlavný nástroj pre získanie informácií o zrnitostnom zložení sedimentov bola použitá makrogranulometrická analýza metódou podľa Wolmana (1954). Pozornosť je venovaná predovšetkým vplyvu hradenia toku na veľkosť dnových sedimentov. Za týmto účelom bola zrnitosť v rámci hradeného úseku zisťovaná v 15 lokalitách rozdelených na základe relatívnej polohy voči prehrádzkam (nad, pod a medzi). Pre porovnanie s nehradeným tokom bol odber uskutočnený taktiež 6 lokalitách v neovplyvnenom úseku. Výsledky odhalili nápadnú zmenu trendu medzi nehradeným a hradeným tokom. Zatiaľ čo v prvom prípade sa neobjavil nápadný trend, v hradenej časti bolo zistené výrazné poprúdové hrubnutie sedimentov, ktoré bolo pripísané zvyšujúcej sa transportnej kapacite toku vďaka obmedzenému transportu sedimentov vplyvom prehrádzok. Rovnako sa tu potvrdil všeobecne uvádzaný trend, ktorý predpokladá výskyt jemnejších sedimentov nad prehrádzkami a naopak hrubších sedimentov pod nimi.
