Antioxidant mechanisms of bees

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce shrnuje dosavadní poznatky o antioxidačních mechanismech u včely medonosné (Apis mellifera). Antioxidační mechanismy jsou přirozenou součástí organismů a jejich hlavní úlohou je ochrana před vznikem oxidativního stresu, který je způsobován nahromaděním reaktivních metabolitů kyslíku a dusíku v organismu. V práci jsou popsány základní enzymatické a neenzymatické antioxidační systémy včely, mezi které patří z enzymatických antioxidantů superoxid dismutáza, kataláza, peroxidázy a reduktázy, z neenzymatických vitamin E, vitamin C, karotenoidy, glutathion, thioredoxin a vitellogenin. Dále je zde zmíněná i antioxidační funkce některých hormonů, ze kterých je nejdůležitější juvenilní hormon. Množství a aktivita antioxidantů může být také ovlivňována různými vlivy, například stářím organismu, znečištěním prostředí či nemocemi. Cílem mé práce je shrnout dosud známé informace o jednotlivých antioxidačních mechanismech včel, jejich ovlivnění vnějším prostředím a působení na různé aspekty života včely medonosné, jako je například rozmnožování, stárnutí a let.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis summarizes present knowledge about antioxidant mechanisms of honey bee (Apis mellifera). Antioxidant mechanisms are natural part of organisms and their main task is to protect the organism against development of oxidative stress due to the accumulation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. There are described elemental enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems of bees in this work, described enzymatic antioxidants include superoxid dismutase, catalase, peroxidases and reductases, non-enzymatic ones are vitamin E, vitamin C, carotenoids, glutathione, thioredoxin and vitellogenin. There is also mentioned the antioxidative function of some hormones of which is juvenile hormone the most important one. The level and activity of antioxidants can be influenced for example by the age of organism, pollution or diseases. The goal of my work is to summarize recently known information about particular antioxidant mechanisms of bees, the influence of the environment on them and their impact on the various aspects of honey bee life, for instance reproduction, ageing and flight.
