Analysis of the Hot hand phenomenon in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Abstract:

Fenomén hot hand byl důkladně zkoumán v různých tradičních sportech. Jeho důsledky a význam zůstávají v rychlém světě e-sportu, zejména v kontextu profesionálních týmů Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), z velké části neprozkoumané. CS:GO jako jedna z nejpopulárnějších her v e-sportu poskytuje jedinečnou platformu pro studium tohoto jevu s ohledem na týmovou povahu soutěže a rozsáhlá historická data. Cílem této bakalářské práce je kvantifikovat dopad fenoménu hot hand na výsledky týmů ve hře CS:GO prostřednictvím analýzy výsledků zápasů a vítězných sérií týmů účastnících se významných turnajů. Pomocí statistické metody, jako je regresní analýza, byl zkoumán efekt hot hand, aby tak bylo možné posoudit jeho skutečný dopad na výsledky zápasů. Tento přístup poskytuje nové poznatky o strategiích optimalizace výkonu v e-sportech a přispívá k lepšímu pochopení samotného fenoménu. Zjištění naznačují, že existuje pozitivní vztah mezi hot hand a úspěchem týmu, což může mít důležité důsledky pro trenéry, hráče, analytiky a sázkové kanceláře v odvětví e-sportu. Rozšíření studia efektu hot hand do oblasti e-sportu poskytuje jedinečný pohled na tento jev, který doposavad zůstával v tradičních sportech nejasný.

Abstract:

The hot hand phenomenon has been extensively studied in various traditional sports. However, its implications and relevance in the fast-paced world of e-sports, particularly in the context of professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) teams, remain largely unexplored. CS:GO, as one of the most popular games in e-sports, provides a unique platform for studying this phenomenon due to the team-based nature of the competition and extensive historical data. The aim of this thesis is to quantify the impact of the hot hand phenomenon on team performance in CS:GO by analyzing match results and win streaks of teams participating in major tournaments. Using a statistical method such as regression analysis, the hot hand effect was examined to assess its true impact on match outcomes. This approach provides new insights into performance optimization strategies in e-sports and contributes to a better understanding of the phenomenon itself. The findings suggest that there is a positive relationship between hot hand and team success, which may have important implications for coaches, players, analysts and bookmakers in the e-sports industry. Extending the study of the hot hand effect to the field of e-sports provides a unique perspective on this phenomenon that has remained obscure in traditional sports.
