Interactions between ants and woody plant species: key factors affecting ant preferences of tree

Abstract:

Předložená práce je zaměřena na studium příčin výskytu mravenců na stromech v temperátních lesích. V rešeršní části popisuji faktory, které mohou ovlivňovat kolonizaci stromů (například vztahy mravenců a mšic, dostupnost slunečních paprsků atd.). Ve druhé části popisuji návrh experimentu a předběžné výsledky vlastního výzkumu kolonizace stromů mravenci v NPR Polanská Niva, doplněné o pozorování Formica rufa v Mostech u Jablunkova. Ve zkoumané oblasti NPR byly vytyčeny čtyři plochy s celkem 120 stromy. Mravenci nejvíce navštěvované stromy byly Fraxinus excelsior, Acer campestre, Acer platanoides a Quercus robur. Přestože počty jedinců na stromech nebyly příliš vysoké, nejvyšší průměrnou návštěvnost jedinců během obou sezón měl Fraxinus excelsior. Mravenci většinou upřednostňovali stromy s hrubou rozbrázděnou kůrou. Závislost abundance na obvodu kmene nelze jednoznačně potvrdit. Nicméně v roce 2013 měla abundance vzestupnou tendenci směrem ke stromům s největším obvodem okolo 200 cm.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on causality of an ant distribution on trees in temperate forest. Review in first part of the thesis analyses factors affecting tree colonization (e.g. relationships between ants and aphids, light availability etc.). In second part I describe design and preliminary results of my own survey within the area of NNR Polanska Niva and additional observation of Formica rufa within a site near Mosty u Jablunkova. Four blocks comprising 120 trees in total were selected within targeted area (Polanska Niva). Fraxinus excelsior, Acer campestre, Acer platanoides and Quercus robur were the most frequently visited trees. Despite ant abundance on trees was not extremely high, Fraxinus excelsior was the tree species with the highest mean ant abundance for both vegetation season (2012, 2013). The ants preferred the tree species with more furrowed bark. Relationships between abundance and trunk circumference was not significant in total. However the abundance is slightly increasing along circumference gradient during the second vegetation season.
