Historical and Cultural Role of Pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela

Abstract:

Práce předkládá obecné poznatky v oblasti fenoménu náboženských poutí, zejména jejich historického kontextu a sociálního významu a tyto poznatky dokumentuje na vzniku a vývoji konkrétních tras do španělského města Santiaga de Compostela. Součástí práce je popis a analýza významných architektonických a uměleckých děl, jež vznikla na těchto trasách. Práce tedy shrnuje nejen sociální význam této náboženské poutě, ale také význam kulturní, jenž dodnes představuje významnou součást evropského kulturního dědictví. Závěr práce je následně věnován fenoménu současného poutnictví.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with general knowledge of the phenomenon of religious pilgrimage, in particular their historical context and social significance, and documents these findings in the origin and development of specific routes to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. This thesis includes analysis of significant architectural and artistic works that where created along these routes. Therefore, it summarizes not only the social significance of this religious pilgrimage, but also the cultural significance that still plays an important part of Europe's cultural heritage. The conclusion of the thesis then focuses on the phenomenon of contemporary pilgrimage.
