The Satire of Ishmael Reed: From Non-standard Sexuality to Argumentation

Abstract:

Cílem této disertační práce je popsat satiru Ishmaela Reeda, zasadit ji do kontextu, a doplnit tak současný stav poznání v oboru afroamerické literatury. Práce tak činí skrz rozčlenění satiry přítomné v deseti autorových románech, a to ve srovnání s typologií satiry navrženou Leonardem Feinbergem. Cílem této části práce je zjistit, které satirické techniky a v jakém období převládají v Reedově satirickém korpusu. Práce dochází k výsledku, že v Reedově rané satiře převládá společenská kritika založená na nestandardní sexualitě, zatímco v jeho současné satiře (od roku 1993 dále) převládá společenská kritika založená na argumentaci. V diskusi propojuje disertační práce tyto dva mody satiry se dvěma druhy amerického rasismu – s rasismem zjevným a skrytým. Práce ukazuje, že spolu s tím, jak se zjevný rasismus stal v Americkém společenském diskurzu nepřípustným, a byl tak nahrazen rasismem skrytým, aktualizoval Ishmael Reed svoji satiru, která je díky argumentaci efektivnějším modem společenské kritiky a lepším prostředkem pro zpochybňování současného modu rasismu.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses a gap in Ishmael Reed scholarship by describing and contextualising his use of satire. It examines the satire present in ten novels published between 1967 and 2011 against Leonard Feinberg’s taxonomy of satirical techniques to establish which satirical techniques are most frequently used and when. It demonstrates that Reed’s satire has evolved from a stage which frequently criticises through non-standard sexuality (as can be seen in his early novels) to a stage which frequently criticises through logical argumentation (as can be seen in novels published in 1990s and 2010s). The thesis connects these two modes of satire to two types of American racism: overt (present in the public discourse till the Civil Rights Movement) and covert (present in the public discourse after the Civil Rights Movement). It concludes by illustrating that as overt racism became unacceptable in American public discourse, Ishmael Reed updated his satire so that it would be argument-driven and could remain an effective type of social critique even under the new circumstances.
