Structure of the City in a Green. Chapters from the History of Modern Architecture in the 20th Century in Hradec Králové

Abstract:

Text rigorozní práce je souborem studií věnovaných architektuře, designu a památkové péči v Hradci Králové ve 20. století. Text práce si nečiní nároky na úplnost, je spíše doplněním stávajícího stavu poznání o méně známe kapitoly – příběhy architektů, stavebníků a staveb, jimž zatím bylo věnováno méně pozornosti. Kapitoly jsou řazeny chronologicky a vzájemně se prolínají. Příběh začíná v okamžiku zboření josefínské pevnosti a uvolnění prvních pozemků k zastavění – okolí dnešní Komenského třídy a Orlické kotliny, kde vznikla první vilová čtvrť. Genezi buržoazní vily ve městě, jakožto prvnímu symptomu modernismu, se věnuje první kapitola. Další část se věnuje stavbě orientalistické synagogy a jejímu architektovi. Následně je pozornost věnována dílu Jana Kotěry – především jeho budově muzea. Na tyto kapitoly navazuje studie o angažmá Františka Thomayera v Hradci Králové, který položil základy veřejných parků v Hradci Králové. Tuto strukturu zeleně v meziválečném období ukotvil Gočárův regulační plán a byla doplněna dalšími zelenými prostranstvími. Hradec Králové byl mezi válkami multikonfesním prostředím, silnou tradici zde měla Církev evangelická a nové signifikantní postavení získala Církev československá. Vznikly zde tři chrámové stavby – kostel katolický, evangelický a husitský, které ukazují podobnosti i odlišnosti přístupů moderních architektů i jednotlivých církví k sakrálnímu prostoru. Dále je pozornost věnována architektu Jindřichu Freiwaldovi, který představuje typickou osobnost, jenž se nestala paradigmatickou postavou moderní architektury – nebyl invenčnímim vůdcem nových stylů, přesto dokázal dospět ke komerčnímu úspěchu a zabýval se typologií soukromých i veřejných staveb. Hradec Králové je chudý na ukázky kubistické architektury, avšak jeden z mála blízkých příkladů může být zemědělské učiliště od Theodora Petříka, jehož kubistická podoba vznikala už v letech 1913–1915. Hradecké dílo Josefa Gočára, kterému byla v minulosti věnována řada hodnocení a interpretací, doplňuje studie, která staví jeho školní budovy do typologických souvislostí a tříbení jejich funkcionality. Regioalismus, důležitý pro šíření a variaci moderní myšlenky v architektuře, zosobňují kapitoly věnované Václavu ml. a Janu Rejchlovým, působícím na Hradecku. Sociální přístup uplatňuje studie o díle Otakara Novotného ve východních Čechách, především pro textilního magnáta Rudolfa Steinského-Sehnoutku. Funckionalismus připomíná studie o Novákových PALACE garážích od architekta Josefa Fňouka. Přehledovou kapitolu o poválečné architektuře ve městě doplňuje ještě podrobnější sonda o poválečné spolupráci Jana Rejchla a jeho syna Milana Rejchla na Hradecku. Text práce uzavírá kapitola o tom, jak v poslední době probíhala památková péče o moderní architekturu ve městě a kapitola o sbírce moderního designu v Muzeu východních Čech v Hradci Králové. Jednotlivé studie jsou asymetrické – od monografií staveb, připomínky působení jednotlivých architektů, přes příspěvky ke stavební typologii, přehledové studie až po aplikaci různých metod dějin umění na konkrétní příklady. Zabývají se architekturou, ale i související sochařskou tvorbou, interiéry, zelení, urbanismem. Spojujícím článkem je prostředí Hradce Králové a jeho proměny. A především zájem naplnit požadavek Meyera Shapira kladený na historiky umění, tedy zjistit a vysvětlit, proč umělecká díla, v tomto případě architektura, vypadá tak, jak vypadá.

Abstract:

The thesis is a collection of studies dedicated to architecture, urbanism, design and heritage care in Hradec Králové in the 20th century. The text does not aim at complexity, it is supposed to complement the existing state of knowledge with less presented chapters – stories of architects, builders and buildings that have been neglected in literature so far. The chapters are sorted chronologically and are complementary. The story starts in the moment of the demolition of Josephian fortifications and freeing the first building estates – Komenský street and Orlická kotlina district, where the first villa dependency was built. The genesis of bourgeois villas as the first symptom of modern architecture is described in the first chapter. The following one is dedicated to the Orientalistic synagogue and its architect. Three studies about the work of Jan Kotěra, especially his most significant building – the Museum, follow. These chapters are complemented with a study about František Thomayer who laid down the basics of public parks in Hradec Králové. This structure of the greenery was confirmed between the two World Wars by Josef Gočár's general urban plan and it was supplemented by other green spaces. Hradec Králové was a multi-confession environment. The Evangelical Church had a strong tradition here and also the Czechoslovak Church became very significant. Three modern churches were built – the Catholic, Evangelical and Hussite. They show similarities and also distinctions in the concept of modern sacral spaces in the approach of different architects and different churches. The next chapter is dedicated to architect Jindřich Freiwald. He is a typical personality who did not become paradigmatic in shaping the modern architecture, or was not inventive figure of new styles. However, he managed to become commercially successful and he engaged the typology of private and public buildings. Hradce Králové lacks buildings in the cubist style although the Agricultural High School by architect Theodor Petřík can be regarded as one of a few examples. Its cubist shape was already designed between 1913 and 1915. The work of Josef Gočár in Hradec that has been already numerously described and interpreted is represented by a study dedicated to his three school buildings and their changing typology and functionality. Regionalism, which is so important for spreading the modernist ideas in architecture, is included in the following chapters about Gočár's student Jan Rejchl and his elder brother Václav Rejchl Jr. who worked in the Hradec Králové region. Social architecture history is used in the chapter about Otakar Novotný's works in the Hradec Králové region, especially the orders from cotton magnate Rudolf Steinský-Sehnoutka. Functionalism, which was very rare in Hradec Králové, is represented in the chapter dedicated to Novák's PALACE garages by local architect Josef Fňouk. The summarizing chapter about post-war architecture in the town is completed with a probing chapter about the post-war cooperation of Jan Rejchl and his son Milan Rejchl in the Hradec Králové region. The thesis finishes with a text dedicated to heritage care of the modernist architecture in Hradec Králové in the past 10 years and a short chapter about modern interior design in the collections of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. The chapters are asymmetric – from buildings monographs, reminderss of several architects’ agendas in Hradec Králové, to building typology, summarizing chapters and the application of different methods to specific situations. The thesis deals with architecture, urbanism, garden architecture, design and heritage care. The only connecting issue is the environment of the city of Hradec Králové and its changes and the aim to fulfil a demand of Meyer Shapiro, who asks the art historians to describe and explain why the artistic works – or architectural works in our case – look exactly the way they look.
