The Role of the European Union in Promotion the Rule of Law in Kosovo

Abstract:

The thesis aims to examine the role of the EU in promotion the Rule of Law in Kosovo after the independence of Kosovo in 2008. The EU is engaged in democratization of Kosovo, in particular in the field of rule of law. “In 2008, the EU launched the largest EU mission ever launched by CSDP. The EU Rule of Law in Kosovo (EULEX), was called to assist and support the Kosovo authorities in the field Rule of Law, specifically in the police, judiciary and customs areas” . Followingly, there are different arguments and perceptions about the role of the EU external policies contributing to the Rule of Law in Kosovo. Thus, the author of this thesis seeks to assess the role of the EU, by presenting improvements and stumbles as consequence of the EU involvement in promotion the Rule of Law in Kosovo after independence of Kosovo in 2008. The significance of the thesis consists on the relevance that the process has for the society in Kosovo, as EU accession aspirate enjoys a broad support within the society in Kosovo. Regarding the EU accession support among Kosovars, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo claimed: “In 10 Kosovars, 9 of them are pro European for historical reason state building was enabled through the intervention of Europe and USA” . Moreover, assessing in decent way the EU involvement in Kosovo, also may serve to better grasp the conceptualization of EU external policies conducted in neighborhood countries that aspire acceding in the EU.
