England and Karel Čapek. The Publishing and Reception of Karel Čapek's Works in the British Isles

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vydáváním a recepcí díla Karla Čapka ve Velké Británii, zčásti také v Irsku. V první části na základě archivních materiálů nakladatelství Oxford University Press a Allen and Unwin rekonstruujeme proces přípravy Čapkovy knihy a čtenáře seznamujeme s hlavními osobnostmi (překladateli, literárními agenty, nejvýznamnějším nakladatelem), které Čapkovo dílo zprostředkovaly britským divákům a čtenářům. Následně se zabýváme vydáváním jednotlivých knih, a to od doby vzniku překladu až po současnost. V druhé části na základě recenzí z tisku do roku 1950 analyzujeme ohlas Čapkových děl. Cílem této práce je odpovědět co nejobjektivněji na otázku, zda Karel Čapek jako spisovatel ve Velké Británii uspěl. Sledujeme-li historii vydávání jeho díla, zjišťujeme, jaké postavení zaujímal na knižním trhu, popularitu zde měříme počtem vydání. Rozbor recenzí nám naopak umožňuje kvalitativní přístup k tématu, skrze novináře autora vidíme očima jeho britských současníků. Spojením těchto dvou rovin by měl vzniknout plastický obraz o působení Čapkova díla v zemi, ke které měl tak vřelý vztah.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with publishing and reception of Karel Čapek´s works in Great Britain and partly in Ireland. In the first part we reconstruct the publishing process according to archive materials of Oxford University Press and Allen and Unwin publishing house. We introduce the main personalities (translators, literary agents and the most important publisher) that helped to bring Čapek´s work to British readers and theatre-goers. Then we focus on the publishing history of each Čapek´s book, from the time when it was translated to nowadays. In the second part we analyze the reception of Čapek´s works according to reviews published in the press from 1923 to 1950. The aim of the thesis is to give an objective answer (as objective as possible) to the question if Karel Čapek as a writer was successful in Great Britain. When we focus on publishing history we measure his popularity by his position in the book market, by the number of editions. In the reviews analyses we employ the quality approach that enables us to see Čapek from the perspective of his British contemporaries. These two approaches should give a compact picture of Karel Čapek´s work in his beloved country.
