The Metamorphoses of Investment Decisions

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and to quantify models and the methods of investment decisions and to apply theoretical knowledge to a specific example in Slovakia. The work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the characteristics of investments and their position in decision-making process, describing the classification of investments from different perspectives, as well as addressing investment impact on business competitiveness. The second chapter focuses on a quantification of investment evaluation methods. Various static and dynamic methods of investment evaluation are defined, focusing on the adequacy and appropriateness of their use in practice. The third chapter provides the cost of capital genesis, along with the methodological procedures of calculation. The fourth section applies the previous theoretical knowledge to a model example, which is set into an international company in Slovakia. Quantitative methods have been used in the investment project example. We have set the cost of capital by several models, which incorporate the results into the next steps in the process. The investment project is evaluated by dynamic methods, using a discount rate calculated by used models. This thesis is conceived as a theoretical and practical study, in which the theoretical knowledge is applied for the investment decision-making process to a specific investment project in Slovakia.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce je popísať a kvantifikovať modely a metódy investičného rozhodovania a teoretické poznatky aplikovať na modelovom príklade v podmienkach SR. Práca je rozdelená do štyroch kapitol. V prvej kapitole sa venujeme charakteristike investícií a ich umiestneniu v rozhodovacom procese podniku, popisujeme klasifikácie investícií z rôznych hľadísk a venujeme sa ich vplyvu na konkurencieschopnosť podniku. Druhá kapitola je zameraná na kvantifikáciu modelov a metód hodnotenia efektívnosti investičných projektov. Definujeme jednotlivé statické a dynamické metódy hodnotenia a zameriavame sa na vhodnosť a adekvátnosť ich použitia v praxi. Tretia kapitola prináša genézu témy nákladov kapitálu spolu s metodickými postupmi výpočtu. Štvrtá kapitola aplikuje predchádzajúce teoretické poznatky na modelový príklad, ktorý je zasadený do prostredia medzinárodnej spoločnosti na Slovensku. V predmetom príklade používame súčasné kvantitatívne metódy. Stanovujeme náklady kapitálu niekoľkými modelmi, ktorých výsledky zapracujeme do ďalších krokov procesu. Investičný projekt hodnotíme dynamickými metódami, za použitia diskontných sadzieb vypočítaných určenými modelmi. Práca je koncipovaná ako teoreticko-praktická štúdia, kde na základe teoretických poznatkov aplikujeme proces investičného rozhodovania na konkrétny investičný projekt v podmienkach SR.
