Anger in the Old Czech Chivalric Literature of the 14th Century

Abstract:

Staročeská rytířská epika prezentuje specifický náhled do představ středověké šlechty, jejích hodnot a prezentuje i jistou estetickou preferenci. Tato práce se zabývá emocí hněvu ve vybraných osmi pramenech staročeské rytířské epiky vzniklých od konce 13. do začátku 15. století. Inspirována konceptem Barbary Rosenwein se snaží nahlížet na českou šlechtu 14. století jako na součást emoční komunity, která ve svých rytířských eposech reflektuje deskriptivní, ale i normativní aspekty hněvu. Důraz je kladen na specifičnost verbálních i tělesných reprezentací hněvu, na symboliku hněvu a na fenomén ira regis.

Abstract:

Old Czech chivalric epic presents a specific insight into the ideas of medieval nobility, its values and also presents a certain aesthetic preference. The focus of this thesis is the emotion of anger in the selected eight sources of Old Czech chivalric epic created since the end of the 13th century to the beginning of 15th century. Inspired by the concept of Barbara Rosenwein, it aims to view the Czech nobility of the 14th century as part of the emotional community that reflects descriptive and also prescriptive aspects of anger in its chivalric epic. The emphasis is placed on the uniqueness of verbal and physical representations of anger, on the symbolism of anger, and on the ira regis phenomena.
