Spains Second Republic: the Breakdown of One Democracy

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na analýzu důvodů vedoucích k rozpadu španělské demokracie v letech 1931-36. Takzvaná Druhá republika byla jedinečným příkladem politického systému založeného na demokratizaci a liberální modernizaci vzniknuvšího v evropském meziválečném období. Nicméně existence Druhé republiky byla poznamenána mnohý sociálními a ekonomickými problémy, které vyústily v roce 1936 v občanskou válku. Rozpad demokracie Druhé republiky byl reflektován v mnoha historických a sociologických studiích, nicméně mnoho těchto studií bylo vypracováno před více než 40 roky. Existuje proto dnes silná poptávka po výzkumu rozpadu španělské demokracie ve světle nových vědeckých paradigmat. Ve světle nových přístupů zkoumajících rozpad demokratických systémů, je text práce zaměřen na analýzu představeného problému pomocí dvou základních rámců. První přístup zdůrazňuje roli politických institucí v procesu selhání politického systému, zatímco druhý vyzdvihuje socioekonomické proměnné. Proto je práce zaměřena na analýzu politického a ekonomického vývoje Španělské republiky v letech 1931-33.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to examine reasons of the breakdown of Spanish democracy in the years 1931-36. The so-called Second Republic was a unique case of a political system based on political democratisation and liberal modernisation established in the European inter-war period. However, the Second Republic faced many structural social and economical problems that culminated in the break out of civil war in 1936. The case of Second Republic’s breakdown was reflected in many historical a sociological studies. Nevertheless, many of these studies were carried out at least 40 years ago. Therefore, there is a strong call for examination of the Spanish case of the democratic breakdown from the view of new scientific paradigms. In the light of new approaches to study democratic regime’s failure, this text is focused on the analysis of the presented problem through two basic frameworks. The first approach stresses the role of political institutions in the process of political system’s failure and the second the role of socioeconomic variables in that process. Because of this the paper examines the political and economical development of the Spanish Second Republic in the years 1931-33.
