Byzantine begging poetry within the contemporary literary context

Abstract:

Disertační práce je komparativní studií o byzantské žebravé poezii (12. století). V úvodu vymezuje korpus textů spadajících do tohoto žánru (Ptochoprodromika, Theodóros Prodromos, Manganeios Prodromos, „Majuriho báseň“, verše z vězení Michaéla Glyka), podává zprávu o stavu bádání o těchto textech a zařazuje je do kontextu soudobého literárního dění. Dále podává stylistickou analýzu (stylistické figury a tropy), rozbor topiky a intertextových vazeb těchto básní na soudobou literaturu (Haplucheirovo Dramation...) i na literaturu starší (Hippónax, Aristofanés, Lúkianos). Zvláštní kapitola je věnována analogiím mezi byzantskou žebravou poezií a poezií prvních vagantských básníků (Archipoeta, Hugo Primas). Práce se zabývá také otázkou možných cest vlivu mezi západní a byzantskou žebravou poezií a žánrovým zařazením této poezie.

Abstract:

The dissertation presents a comparative study of Byzantine begging poetry (12th century). The corpus of the studied texts is defined in the introduction (Ptochoprodromika, Theodore Prodromos, Manganeios Prodromos, the Majuri’s poem, verses from prison of Michael Glykas) where all available literature on the subject is surveyed and the texts are set in the contemporary literary context. Furthermore, it brings a stylistic analysis (stylistic figures and tropes), examination of the topoi and the intertextual connections of these poems with the contemporary literature (Haplucheir’s Dramation) as well as with the classical one (Hipponax, Aristophanes, Lucian). A separate chapter examines analogies between the Byzantine begging poetry and the early goliardic poets (Archipoeta, Hugh Primas). The thesis also deals with the possible ways of influence between the Western and Byzantine begging poetry and its genre category.
