Level of detail within the 3D cartographic visualization

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou úrovně detailu (LoD) a úrovně realismu (LoR) ve virtuálních prostředích (VEs). Kromě shrnutí různých konceptů od několika autorů, studie analyzuje jednotlivé úrovně LoD z odborných publikací. Hlavním cílem je ověření vlivu LoD na vnímání trojrozměrné vizualizace. Kromě geometrické LoD se v práci řešila i vizuální úroveň realismu (LoR) v podobě rozsahu užití fasádních textur na budovách. Ověření vlivu LoD a LoR na vnímání 3D vizualizací bylo provedeno na základě uživatelského testování, pro něž byly navrženy čtyři varianty VEs – MixedVE LoD 1, RealisticVE LoD 1, MixedVE LoD 2 a RealisticVE LoD 2. Bylo otestováno 48 participantů formou between-subject prostřednictvím desktopové VR (DesktopVR) – pseudo 3D. K použitým metodám testování byl použit dotazník OSIQ, Real-time úlohy, měření kvantitativních a kvalitativních dat, Recall dotazník a zákres trasy absolvované ve VE do 2D mapy. Výsledky uživatelského testování naznačily, že participanti v LoD 2 byli bez časového limitu schopni početnější identifikace náboženských budov než v LoD 1. Pod časovým limitem při exploraci území objevili více lékáren v MixedVE než v RealisticVE. Zpětná vazba (Recall) zase prokázala lepší výsledky v LoD1 než v LoD 2, rovněž i při zákresu trasy do mapy. Vizuální a vizuálně-prostorová část Recall dotazníku nastínily lepší výsledky v MixedVE než v RealisticVE. Výsledky jsou jen pravděpodobné a je třeba je dále ověřit s početnějším vzorkem participantů a vyšší mírou imerze VR.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of the level of detail (LoD) and the level of realism (LoR) in virtual environments (VEs). In addition to summarizing various concepts from several authors, the study analyzes the various levels of LoD from expert publications. The main goal is to verify the influence of LoD on the perception of three-dimensional visualization. In addition to geometric LoD, the thesis also dealt with the visual level of realism (LoR) in the form of the extent of the use of facade textures on buildings. Verification of the influence of LoD and LoR on the perception of 3D visualizations was performed on the basis of user testing, for which four variants of VEs were designed – MixedVE LoD 1, RealisticVE LoD 1, MixedVE LoD 2 a RealisticVE LoD 2. 48 participants were tested between-subject through a desktop VR (DesktopVR) – pseudo 3D. The applied methods include OSIQ questionnaire, Real-time tasks, measurement of quantitative and qualitative data, Recall questionnaire and sketch of the route completed in the VE into a 2D map. The results of the user testing indicated that the participants in LoD 2 were able to identify more religious buildings without time limit than in LoD 1. Below the time limit, participants discovered more pharmacies in MixedVE than in RealisticVE. Feedback (Recall) showed better results in LoD1 than in LoD 2 and in the sketch of the route on the map as well. The visual and visual-spatial part of the Recall questionnaire showed better results in MixedVE than in RealisticVE. The results are only probable and need to be further verified with a larger sample of participants and a higher degree of immersion of the VR.
