Exploring Urban Indigenous Identities in Tommy Orange’s There There and Katherena Vermette’s The Break

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat portréty městských identit původních obyvatel v USA a Ka-nadě zkoumáním dvou současných románů napsaných domorodými autory: There There od Tommy Orange (2018) z USA a The Break od Katherena Vermette (2016) z Kanady. Práce jako taková je rozdělena na dvě části: první, teoretická, se zaměřuje na městskou migraci do-morodých národů v USA a Kanadě. Kvůli řadě asimilačních politik v obou zemích často porovnávají domorodé národy svou jedinečnou identitu se stereotypy v populární kultuře a médiích. Analytická část se zabývá samotnými romány. I když je každý jedinečný, existují určité podobnosti v tom, jak postavy navigují „autenticitu,“ léčení v městech a co tvoří „Indi-an Country“. Romány se, avšak liší v reprezentaci násilí: zatímco There There rozebírá kul-turní násilí, The Break zkoumá genderové. Obě knihy nicméně zvyšují povědomí o rostou-cím počtu původních obyvatel v městech a varují před homogenizací jejich kultur.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyze the portrayals of urban Indigenous identities in the U.S. and Can-ada by examining two contemporary novels written by Indigenous authors: Tommy Or-ange’s There There (2018) from the U.S. and Katherena Vermette’s The Break (2016) from Canada. As such, the thesis is divided into two parts; the first, theoretical one, focuses on urban migration of Indigenous peoples in the U.S. and Canada. Because of series of assimi-lationist policies in both countries, Indigenous peoples often compare their unique identities against the stereotyped misrepresentations in popular culture and media. The analytical part considers the two novels themselves. Though each of them is unique, there are certain simi-larities in how they portray characters’ navigation of ‘authenticity,’ healing in the urban are-as, and what constitutes “Indian Country”. Yet, they differ in their representation of vio-lence; while There There considers the cultural violence, The Break examines gender vio-lence. Nevertheless, both novels raise awareness about the rising Indigenous populations in urban areas and warn against homogenization of their many cultures.
