Depeche Mode in Prague, March 11, 1988: The reaction of the security authorities and the majority society in the late socialist Czechoslovakia to the new pop culture phenomenon

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se pokusí zachytit a zmapovat, jak byli v pozdně normalizačním Československu organizováni a disciplinováni fanoušci hudební skupiny Depeche Mode, kteří se zúčastnili jejího "zlomového" koncertu, který se konal 11. 3. 1988 v Praze. Po tomto koncertu se rozvinula nová komunita mládeže, která měla rysy subkultury. Práce se bude pohybovat v mezích 20. století v České republice, resp. v Československu. V teoretické části se bude věnovat konceptu subkultury a disciplinace v širších souvislostech. Výchozí tezí práce jsou zaznamenané, mnohdy až hysterické obavy oficiálních míst, zjevně netušících, co lze čekat od nových "chuligánů", nezapadajících do tehdejší režimní představy o volnočasových aktivitách mládeže. Výzkum bude zaměřen na stereotypizovaný obraz této subkultury optikou tehdejších státních orgánů, především na zmapování ohlasů koncertu konaného v roce 1988 v denním tisku a v hudebních periodikách, včetně tzv. fanzinů, ale i na bezpečnostní opatření spojená s uvedeným koncertem a na reakce orgánů SNB, pokud je bude možno vysledovat v dochovaných archivních materiálech. Práce se bude věnovat jak reakci odpovědných režimních institucí a orgánů veřejného pořádku, ale též postojům majoritní společnosti. V této části bude využito i postupů orální historie, tedy rozhovorů s aktivními členy bývalého fanklubu, vystavěných na informacích z odborné literatury, archivních materiálů a rozboru dobových periodik.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis attempts to capture and map how the fans of the Depeche Mode music group were organized and disciplined in late normalization Czechoslovakia, who attended its "breakthrough" concert, which took place on March 11, 1988, in Prague. A new youth community which had the features of a subculture was developed after this concert. The thesis contains the topic of "subculture of the 20th century in the Czech Republic, respectively in Czechoslovakia". The theoretical part dedicates the concept of subculture and discipline in a broader context. The initial point of the thesis is the recorded, often even hysterical concerns of official places, apparently having no idea what to expect from the new "hooligans", who do not fit into the then regime's idea of youth leisure activities. The research will focus on the stereotyped image of this subculture through the lens of the state authorities of the time, primarily on mapping the responses to the concert held in 1988 in the daily press and in music periodicals, including so-called fanzines, but also on the security measures associated with this concert and on the reactions of the SNB authorities, if they can be traced in preserved archival materials. The thesis devotes to the reaction of the responsible regime institutions and to the authority of the public order, and to the attitudes of the majority society. I will use some methods of oral history, which means interviews interviews with active members of the former fan club based on information from specialized literature, archive materials and analysis of periodicals, in this part.
