Novice Teachers and Their Management of Participation in the EFL Classroom

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá způsoby, jimiž začínající učitelé (tj. učitelé s ještě nedokončenou profesní kvalifikací) řídí zapojení svých žáků ve výuce během hodin angličtiny jako cizího jazyka. Jejím cílem je odhalit postupy, jež začínající učitelé používají, a reakce žáků na ně. Teoretická část práce se věnuje povaze institucionálního dialogu a způsobům, kterými se projevuje v diskurzu jazykové třídy. Na základě nejnovějšího výzkumu z oblasti řízení participace žáků a také dle předpokladu, že interakce je nezbytnou podmínkou učení, práce volá po větší citlivosti učitelů vůči jemným interakčním procesům, jež se ve třídě odehrávají a jež mohou mít přímý vliv na zprostředkování příležitostí k učení. Samotný výzkum vychází z dat sesbíraných v rámci kurzu interní učitelské praxe. Po provedení konverzační analýzy jeho výsledky ukazují, že začínající učitelé skutečně disponují poměrně širokým repertoárem postupů, které zahrnují: zjišťovací otázky v první i třetí pozici sekvence, úmyslně nedokončené repliky a tzv. kontinuátory (např. uh-um), delší dobu čekání na žákovu odpověď či její předčasné akceptování za účelem vytvoření přátelského prostředí. Práce také předvádí, že použití těchto praktik je často svázáno s bezprostředním didaktickým cílem aktivity. Co se týče předávání slova žákům a vytváření rovných příležitostí, práce ilustruje, že vyvolávání žáků není výhradní doménou učitele, ale že častěji se jedná o výsledek společného úsilí obou stran. Z výsledků je možné vyvodit určité důsledky pro budoucí vzdělávání učitelů, zejména v souvislosti s rozvojem jejich interakční kompetence ve třídě.

Abstract:

This Master diploma thesis deals with the ways in which novice teachers (i.e. teachers who have not yet fully completed their professional qualification) manage the participation of their learners during EFL lessons. Its goal is to uncover what practices the teachers use during fronted whole-class activities and how the learners respond to them. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the nature of institutional dialogue and examines the ways in which it manifests in the L2 classroom discourse. Drawing on the latest research in the area of teachers management of participation and also on the assumption that interaction is a necessary prerequisite for any learning to take place, it concludes with a call for teachers’ greater awareness of the delicate interactional processes which unfold in the classroom since they may have a direct impact on the facilitation of learning opportunities. The research itself is based on data from an internal teaching practice course. Using Conversation Analysis, it shows that there is indeed a large range of practices available to novice teachers; these include: Yes/No questions in first- and third-turn position, use of designedly incomplete utterances and continuers (e.g. uh-um), increased wait time during learners’ second turns, or making it easier for learners to reply by acknowledging their answer in advance. It also demonstrates that the deployment of these practices is often tied to the immediate pedagogical goal of an activity. Considering also turn-allocation and equal opportunities to speak, the thesis illustrates that selecting a student is not always the sole privilege of the teacher, but rather a joint achievement of both parties. These findings bear some implications for future teacher education, particularly in relation to the development of their Classroom Interactional Competence (CIC).
