North versus South in the 19th Century England

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je vysvětlení regionalismu v Anglii a předělu sever a jih na pozadí analýzy děl Emma Jane Austenové a Sever a Jih Elizabeth Gaskellové a jejich historického kontextu. Základem analýzy je náhled do 19. století, v němž obě autorky psaly, jmenovitě Austenová v době regenství a Gaskellová v době viktoriánské. Dále pak následuje vysvětlení regionalismu a vyzdvihnutí jeho aspektů, díky nimž je možná následná analýza samotných děl a jak se, daná díla i autorky, řadí k regionalismu a předělu sever a jih.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is an introduction to regionalism in England and its division into north and south. The movement is further analysed in the novels Emma by Jane Austen and North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. An essential part of the analysis is a brief insight into nineteenth century, which was the publishing time of both Austen and Gaskell - respectivelly Austen wrote during Regency period and Gaskell during mid-Victorian era. This insight is followed by an introduction to regionalism and its aspects, due to which the following analysis shows how both the authors and the novels connect to the topic of regionalism and the north-south divide.
