Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje a srovnává rozdíly Americké a Britské angličtiny v situačních komediích – Black Books a Teorie velkého třesku. Zaobírá se hlavně rozdíly a podobnostmi v gramatice, slovní zásobě a výslovnosti, ale i aspekty typickými pro Britský, respektive Americký humor. Teoretická část práce předkládá shrnutí vývoje obou dialektů anglického jazyka a zkoumá literaturu, která popisuje jazykové rozdíly mezi oběma dialekty. a také literaturu vymezující specifické znaky situační komedie. Praktická část nabízí důkladnou analýzu výskytu a funkce gramatických, slovních a výslovnostních diferenciátorů v primárních zdrojích. Zároveň se soustřeďuje na aspekty humoru, které jsou typické pro oba dialekty. Výsledky práce docházejí k závěru, že gramatika je nejméně spolehlivým indikátorem dialektu, slovní zásoba je relativně spolehlivým indikátorem a výslovnost je nejbezpečnějším indikátorem. Analýza praktické části rovněž dospívá k závěru, že humor pro svou univerzálnost nefunguje jako možný indikátor dialektu anglického jazyka.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse and compare American and British English in situational comedies – Black Books and The Big Bang Theory. The work focuses mainly on the differences and similarities in the use of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, but also on aspects typical of British and American humour respectively. The theoretical part of the research provides a summary of the development of the two dialects and examines literature specifying linguistic differences between the two dialects. It also presents characteristics of the genre of situational comedy. The practical part offers a thorough analysis of the occurrence and function of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation differentiators in the primary sources. It also concentrates on aspects of humour that are characteristic of each of the dialects. The findings of the research conclude that grammar is the least reliable indicator of a dialect, vocabulary is a relatively reliable indicator and pronunciation is the safest indicator. The analysis of the practical part also comes to a conclusion that humour, due to its universal nature, does not function as a possible indicator of a dialect of the English language.
