Aspects of power and empowerment in the relationship between the au pair and the host family (overview study)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na fenomén au pair, především na aspekty moci a empowermentu, které se nachází ve vztahu mezi au pair a hostující rodinou. Au pair mají v hostujících rodinách nízký status a málo moci, např. v ovlivňování chodu domácnosti. Tato práce se tedy může jevit jako vykořisťující a au pair mohou získat špatné zkušenosti s danou prací, např. z toho důvodu, že mohou pracovat na přesčasy, které nejsou řádně finančně ohodnoceny. Na druhou stranu celá zkušenost s touto prací může pro mnoho au pair znamenat emancipaci, tedy posílení v osobním životě. Cílem bakalářské práce je zmapování a analyzování dostupných výzkumů a studií zaměřených na daný fenomén a v rámci nich sledování hlediska moci, empowermentu či bezmoci při posuzování au pair instituce a vztahu mezi au pair a hostující rodinou. Cílem tedy je popsat paradox, který v rámci fenoménu au pair vyvěrá (vykořisťující práce X empowerment). V bakalářské práci je také analyzováno, jaké povinnosti au pair vykonávají v hostujících rodinách. Také jaké motivy au pair vedly k přijetí této práce či jaké vztahy vznikají mezi au pair a hostující rodinou a jaký status, sociální postavení au pair v hostujících rodinách zastávají. Daná bakalářská práce má formu přehledové studie.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is focused on the phenomenon of an au pair, especially the aspects of power and empowerment, which is located in the relationship between au pair and the host family. Au pair has low status and low power in host families, such as in influencing household. This work can be seen as exploitative and au pair can get a bad experience with the job, for example because they can work overtime, which is not properly valued and rewarded. On the other hand, the whole experience with this work can mean emancipation for many au pair, thus strengthening in the personal life. An aim of this thesis is to explore and analyze available research and studies on the phenomenon and within the terms of monitoring power, empowerment or powerlessness, when assessing the relationship between au pair and the host family and au pair institution. The aim of this thesis is going to describe the paradox that in the context of the phenomenon au pair stems (exploitative labour X empowerment). The bachelor thesis also analyzes what obligations au pair had in the host families. Also what motives au pair led to the adoption of this work or what kind of relationships are formed between au pair and the host family and status, social status au pair hold in the host families. The bachelor thesis is an overview study.
