The Literacy of Soldiers in Meiji Period

Abstract:

Úroveň gramotnosti Japonců na počátku období Meidži byla údajně vysoká při porovnání se zbytkem světa. To však nemusí platit vzhledem k současným normám. Také je důležité zdůraznit skutečnost, že pozdější studie gramotnosti jsou založeny na modelech odhadů nebo na nepřímých měřeních. Cílem této práce je porovnat diskrepance těchto metod a určit, jaká opatření byla učiněna japonskou vládou či Ministerstvem školství ke zvýšení úrovně gramotnosti a zda byla tato opatření úspěšná či nikoliv.

Abstract:

The literacy rate of Japanese at the beginning of Meiji period is said to be quite high in comparison with the rest of the world. However this might not apply to contemporary standards. It is also important to stress out the fact that later studies of literacy are based on estimation models or indirect measurements. The goal of this thesis is to compare discrepancies of these methods as well as determine which steps were taken by Japanese government or Ministry of Education to increase literacy rate and whether or not were they successful.
