Cartographic visualization and the maps for orienteering

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá zobrazováním víceúrovňových konstrukcí na mapách pro disciplínu orientačního běhu nazývanou sprint. Sprinty se odlišují především tím, že se odehrávají převážně v urbanizovaném prostředí, kde je výskyt různých mostů či podchodů běžný, což je potřeba reflektovat i v oficiálním znakovém klíči. Po úvodu do problematiky a historickém vývoji relevantních znakových klíčů je představena nejnovější aktualizace sprintového znakového klíče Mezinárodní orientační federace, které si klade za cíl přispět k přehlednosti a jednoznačnosti map v oblastech s víceúrovňovými prvky. Při následném praktickém ověření v komplexním prostoru s mnoha víceúrovňovými prvky byl sledován vliv zmiňovaných úprav na výkonnost běžců pomocí porovnávání mezičasů i čistě navigačních aspektů výkonu mezi skupinou s upraveným znakovým klíčem a kontrolní skupinou s předchozí specifikací. Výsledky experimentu tak tvoří kombinaci kvalitativních i kvantitativních indikátorů, ze kterých ovšem nelze vypozorovat významný vliv nejnovějších úprav na řešení navigačních problémů. Vzhledem k nízkému počtu účastníků a vysoké náročnosti trati je ovšem nutné diskutovat jeho statistickou relevanci.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with a visualisation of multilevel constructions on maps for an orienteering discipline known as sprint. Sprints are different mostly because they happen in urban environment, where an occurrence of variable bridges or underpasses is common, and that needs to be reflected in official symbol set as well. After an introduction to the topic and historical evolution of relevant symbol sets, the newest update of symbol set for sprint orienteering, launched by International Orienteering Federation, is introduced. Its goal is to contribute to readability and clarity of maps in areas with multilevel structures. Subsequent practical verification in complex multilevel area was monitoring an effect of the mentioned updates on a performance of athletes by comparing split times and navigational aspects of their run. A group of runners with the updated symbol set was compared to a control group with the previous symbol specification. Results of the experiment are combination of qualitative and quantitative indicators, but it is not possible to find out any significant effect of the newest updates on solving navigational tasks. Considering quite low number of participants and high difficulty of the course is necessary to discuss its statistical relevance.
