Realism and US Foreign Policy after 9/11

Abstract:

This paper is dealing with theoretical concepts of political realism in international relations in connection with U.S. foreign policy after 9/11. Its aim is to prove the hypothesis that, as a result of terrorist attacks of 9/11, the government of President G.W. Bush applied realistic concepts in U.S. foreign policy. First chapter is analyzing basic concepts of traditional political realism in IR with main focus on the ideas of H. Morgenthau and E.H. Carr. Second part is dealing with developments in US foreign policy after 9/11, especially on the War on Terror, American intervention in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. National Security Strategy of the United States from the year 2002, a key document determining the orientation of American foreign policy is analyzed. In the third chapter, the findings of the first two parts are synthesized, and basic concepts of political realism in IR are applied on the real developments of American foreign policy. The text comes to a conclusion that the United States really applied realistic concepts in their foreign policy after 9/11.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá prvkami tradičného politického realizmu v zahraničnej politike Spojených štátov po 11.09.2001. Pokúša sa potvrdiť hypotézu, že Bushova administratíva v reakcii na teroristické útoky z 11. septembra vo svojej zahraničnej politike realistické koncepty využívala. V prvej časti sú rozobraté základné koncepty tradičného politického realizmu v medzinárodných vzťahoch s dôrazom na diela H. Morgenthaua a E.H. Carra. V druhej kapitole nasleduje genéza americkej zahraičnej politiky po 11. septembri 2001. Text sa zaoberá predovšetkým najvýznamnejšími udalosťami tohto obdobia, a to Vojnou proti terorizmu, intervenciou v Afganistane a vojnou v Iraku. Analyzovaná je aj Národná bezpečnostná stratégia z roku 2002, kľúčový dokument determinujúci smerovanie americkej zahraničnej politiky. V tretej kapitole dochádza k syntézi poznatkov z oboch predchádzajúcich častí, pričom sú základné realistické koncepty aplikované na skutočný vývoj americkej zahraničnej politiky. Práca dochádza k záveru, že Spojené štáty v sledovanom období realistické koncepty skutočne v praxi využívali.
