Parasites of selected anuran taxa in western Palearctic ecoregion: communities, detection, collection and identification

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with species diversity of parasitic organisms in selected groups of amphibians in the western Palearctic, where their comprehensive overview has not yet been completed and is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The first, theoretical part, is a literary research defining the basic definition of the area of the western Palearctic, dealing with the species richness of amphibians in individual biomes of the western Palearctic and factors influencing the distribution and species richness of parasitic organisms in this region. The theoretical part also includes an overview of invasive and non-invasive methods for detection of presence of parasites in the host’s body. The theoretical part is concluded with a frog dissection manual supplemented with photo documentation and detailed descriptions of individual organs. The manual also includes a characteristic of individual groups of parasitic living organisms that can be obtained during the dissection of frogs, together with methods of their fixation, staining and determination. The knowledge gained from the literary research and the methodological manual are applied in the practical part, including selected methods of parasites detection and following microscopic determination of parasitological material obtained from selected frog taxa from localities in Slovakia, Poland and Croatia. The main result of the practical part, however, is the list of parasites from the frogs of the Bufonidae, Hylidae and Ranidae in the western Palearctic in the form of checklists summarizing results from 54 publications.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá druhovou diverzitou parazitických organizmov u vybraných skupín žiab v oblasti západného palearktu, kde doposiaľ neexistoval ich komplexný prehľad a je rozdelená na dve časti - teoretickú a praktickú. Prvú, teoretickú časť, predstavuje literárna rešerš definujúca základné vymedzenie areálu západného palearktu, zaoberajúca sa druhovou bohatosťou žiab v jednotlivých biómoch západného palearktu a faktormi vplývajúcimi na distribúciu a druhovú bohatosť paraziticky žijúcich organizmov. Súčasťou literárnej rešerše je aj prehľad invazívnych a neinvazívnych metód detekcie prítomnosti parazitických organizmov v tele obojživelníkov. Záverom teoretickej časti je prehľadný manuál pitvy žaby doplnený o fotodokumentáciu a podrobné popisy jednotlivých orgánov. Súčasťou manuálu je aj charakteristika jednotlivých skupín paraziticky žijúcich organizmov, ktoré môžeme počas pitvy žiab získať, spolu s metódami ich fixácie, farbenia a determinácie. Poznatky získané z literárnej rešerše a tvorbe metodického manuálu sú uplatnené v praktickej časti pri aplikácii vybraných metód detekcie parazitov a následnej mikroskopickej determinácii parazitologického materiálu získaného z vybraných taxónov žiab z lokalít na Slovensku, Poľsku a Chorvátsku. Hlavným výsledkom praktickej časti je však zoznam parazitov zo žiab čeľadí Bufonidae, Hylidae a Ranidae v západnom palearkte vo forme tzv. checklist-ov zhŕňajúcich výsledky z 54 prác.
