Electoral behaviour of ethnic minorities in Georgia

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je volební chování etnických menšin v Gruzii. V teoretické části bude nejprve popsáno politicko-geografické prostředí Gruzie, volební systém a základy volební geografie. Poté se přejde k popisu jednotlivých národnostních a etnických menšin nacházejících se na území gruzínských regionů Kvemo Kartli a Samcche-Džavacheti, a jejich specifik. Oba dva regiony se nacházejí na jihu Gruzie. Na těchto územích se nachází převážně menšiny Azerů (nejvíce jich žije v Kvemo Kartli) a Arménů (těch nejvíce žije v Samcche-Džavacheti), které budou předmětem výzkumu. V obou zmíněných regionech je přibližně polovina populace zastoupená právě etnickými menšinami. Cílem práce je ověřit hypotézu, že gruzínské etnické menšiny mají tendenci ve volbách hlasovat pro aktuální vládní stranu či koalici. V praktické části bakalářské práce bude provedeno ověření této hypotézy na základě volebních výsledků publikovaných Gruzínskou centrální volební komisí (CESKO) a v případě nutnosti i dalších alternativních zdrojů. Budou analyzovány výsledky demokratických parlamentních a prezidentských voleb. Hodnocené parlamentní volby probíhaly v letech 2008, 2012 a 2016 a hodnocené prezidentské volby v letech 2008 a 2013. Použity budou základní nástroje volební geografie. Následně budou vyvozeny závěry z provedených analýz.

Abstract:

Topic of this bachelor thesis is electoral behaviour of Georgian minorities. Firstly, in theoretical part we will describe political and geographical environment of Georgia, electoral system of Georgia and basics of electoral geography. Furthermore, individual ethnical and national minorities located in two southern regions, specifically Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti and their specifics will be described. Main minorities located in these particular regions are Armenians (mainly located in Samtskhe-Javakheti) and Azerbaijanis( Mainly located in Kvemo Kartli), these two particular minorities will be researched mainly because both are dominant in their regions, taking close to or over 50% of regional population. Objective of the thesis is to verify a hypothesis that Georgian minorities tend to vote for current political party or coalition. In practical part of the thesis verification of this hypothesis will take place, based on electoral results published by Georgian central electoral commission (CESKO) and, if needed, other alternative sources for obtaining results. Results of democratic, parliamentary and presidential elections will be analysed, specifically parliamentary elections in 2008, 2012 and 2016 and presidential elections in 2008 and 2013. Basic tools of electoral geography will be used and results will be deduced from aforementioned analyses.
