Behavioural strategies of two house mouse subspecies (Mus musculus musculus, M.m. Domesticus)

Abstract:

Na různých úrovních od jedinců v populacích po skupiny druhů byly v nedávné době pozorovány a popsány kategorie vzájemně korelovaných typů chování. Jeden z nejvýraznějších behaviorálních typů, agresivita, je často mezi jedinci velmi variabilní, avšak konkrétní úroveň agresivity se zpravidla u daného jedince zachovává bez ohledu na kontext, ve kterém se tento jedinec nachází. S úrovní agresivity můžou být pozitivně nebo negativně korelovány i další vlastnosti, jako je odvaha, neofilie (“novelty seeking“, tj. vyhledávání novinek), explorace nebo rodičovské úsilí. Na základě analýz těchto osobních vzorců chování bylo popsáno několik behaviorálních strategií. Nejčastěji jsou identifikovány dva kontrastní typy: agresivní/proaktivní/„jestřábí“ a méně agresivní/reaktivní/„holubičí“ typ. Předpokládaným zdrojem asociací mezi jednotlivými prvky chováni jsou hormonální a genetické mechanismy. I když obecná evoluční teorie pro existenci behaviorálních strategií zatím není k dispozici, pomocí těchto strategií lze kupříkladu vysvětlit přítomnost individuální variability v populacích, sklon některých taxonů být invazivní (nebo naopak) nebo velkou senzitivitu jiných taxonů ke změnám v životním prostředí. Pochopení behaviorálních strategií má tudíž význam jak v ekologických, tak evolučních studiích. Myš domácí (Mus musculus) se stala jedním z nejdůležitějších evolučních i biomedicínských modelových objektů, včetně studia chování. Kromě cíleně šlechtěných laboratorních kmenů je v současnosti věnována stále větší pozornost volně žijícím populacím a inbredním kmenům z těchto populací odvozeným. Bylo ukázáno, že dva poddruhy myši domácí, Mus musculus musculus a M. m. domesticus, žijící v Evropě, se liší v úrovni agresivity i v preferencích sexuálních partnerů. Řada dalších behaviorálních vzorců však dosud byla studována pouze na standardních (tzv. „klasických“) laboratorních kmenech a jejich zevšeobecnění na volně žijící populace tak může být problematické. Případné rozdíly mezi oběma poddruhy navíc mohly hrát zásadní roli při jejich sekundárním kontaktu v Evropě i následné dynamice vzniklé hybridní zóny. Ve své studii jsem zjistila, že mezi oběma poddruhy existují rozdíly v charakteru exploračního chování, v tendenci k překonání vodní překážky a zvládání stresové zátěže. Celkově lze říci, že samci více agresivního poddruhu domesticus déle posuzují rizika, rychleji překonávají vodní překážky, ale stresové situace zvládají méně efektivně. Naopak méně agresivní samci musculus častěji hledají úkryt, jsou méně ochotní plavat, ale jsou schopni se lépe vyrovnat se stresem. Shrnutím známých poznatků můžeme charakterizovat poddruhově specifické behaviorální strategie: M. m. domesticus odpovídá typu agresivní/proaktivní/“jestřábí“ a M. m. musculus typu neagresivní/reaktivní/“holubičí“. Ačkoli vzhledem ke struktuře hybridní zóny, která je v současnosti obývána směsí mnohafiliálních hybridů, je bezprostřední kontakt čistých rodičovských jedinců silně nepravděpodobný, lze se domnívat, že skrze různé, poddruhově specifické disperzní profily mají behaviorální strategie stále vliv na dynamiku kontaktní zóny. Navíc nám zjištěné behaviorální odlišnosti mohou poukázat na děje odehrávající se v počátečních fázích jejich kontaktu

Abstract:

Categories of correlated types of behaviour have recently been described on various levels, from individuals to groups of species. Aggressiveness, one of the most district behaviours, is often very variable between individuals, but the individual level of agonistic display remains constant for a particular animal across various contexts. Other traits, like novelty seeking, exploration or parental effort, can be positively or negatively correlated with intensity of aggressiveness. Based on these patterns of “individual tactics”, several behavioural strategies were described. Most often, two contrasting behavioural types are defined: aggressive/proactive/hawk type and less aggressive/reactive/dove type. Hormonal and genetic mechanisms are supposed to operate the association between the particular traits forming the types. Although general evolutionary theory for this paradigm is not yet available, the behavioural strategies framework has already helped to explain persistence of individual variability in populations, the tendency of some taxa to be invasive and/or high sensitivity of other taxa toward abrupt changes in environment. Understanding the behavioural strategies is thus inevitable for studying ecology as well as evolution. The house mouse (Mus musculus) has become one of the most important models for the biomedical and evolutionary studies including behaviour. Besides strains selected specifically for particular traits, growing attention is now being paid to wild mice and strains established from these populations (wild derived strains, WDSs). It was shown that the two subspecies of house mouse occupying Europe, Mus musculus musculus and M. m. domesticus, differ in the level of aggressiveness as well as in the pattern of preferences for mating partners. But numbers of other behavioural traits have been studied using standard (“classic”) laboratory strains only, making generalisations of obtained results and their extrapolations on wild populations disputable. Moreover, potential differences observed in house mouse subspecies might play a critical role in initial stages of secondary contact between the two subspecies in Europe including the following dynamics of resulting hybrid zone. In my study, I detected differences among the subspecies in exploration strategies, a tendency to overcome a water barrier, and coping with a stressful situation. Generally, males of the more aggressive subspecies M. m. domesticus spent more time by risk assessment, overcame water barrier faster, but were less effective in coping with stress. Conversely, the less aggressive subspecies M. m. musculus showed more secure seeking, were less prone to swimming, but performed better in a stress situation. Summarising all what is known on house mouse subspecies-specific behaviour, we can characterise two behavioural strategies: M. m. domesticus follows the aggressive/proactive/hawk type whereas M. m. musculus can be characterised as the less aggressive/reactive/dove type. Although direct contact (and hence potential competition) of individuals representing “pure” subspecies is highly improbable within the hybrid zone between the two subspecies, since this area now represents a complex system of multi-generation hybrids, we may assume that through subspecies-specific dispersal patterns, behavioural strategies can still have an impact on the hybrid zone dynamics. Moreover, detected behavioural differences can help us to deduce processes present during the initial stages of the contact between the two subspecies
