St. Catharine, St. Olga - the Comperison of Both Medieval Legends

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce srovnávala legendistické texty, českou středověkou legendu - Legendu o svaté Kateřině, a legendu ruskou, která tematizuje život svaté Olgy. Obě legendy mají mnoho společných prvků i přesto, že vznikly v různých náboženských prostředích. Cílem mé práce bylo nejprve obecně charakterizovat základní rysy středověké literatury a poté legendu jako velmi rozšířený žánr v obou kulturních prostředích. Dále jsem se zaměřila obecně na žánr legendy, na její symboliku a topiku a z téhož hlediska i na žánr žitije v ruské literatuře; kromě jiného, pokusila jsem se o komparaci postav obou protagonistek – světic.

Abstract:

The presented work compared texts of legend character, a Czech medieval legend – Legend of St. Catherine, and a Russian legend pursuing the life of St. Olga. Both the legends have a plenty of common elements, although they originated in different religiouis environments. The aim of my work was first to generally characterize the basic features of medieval literature and then those of a legend as a widespread genre in both cultural environments. Subsequently, I focussed in general terms on the genre of a legend, on its symbolism and topics, and from the same point of view, also on the genre žitije in Russian literature; among other things, I tried to compare the characters of both the protagonists – saints.
