Slovak Film Archive in the period 1958 - 1969. Place which verifies the existence of national cinematography

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis deals with Slovak film archive in the period of 1958 – 1969 in Bratislava. The main aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse how the film archivists proceed in storing, selecting, identifying, categorizing, lending and representing films, which belongs to Slovak national cinematography as well as how these work tasks (methods and practices) become stabilized. Two theoretical approaches have been applied: the concept of gatekeeper based on Nico de Klerk theory and concept of national cinematography base on Ivan Klimes. These two concepts belt into the perception of the film archive as a place where the national heritage was confirmed, dealt with and decided on the basis of the experiences and knowledge of the film archivists themselves. The film archivists are those who stood behind the birth of Slovak film archive and have dominated with the most important technological, scientific and research knowledge about film issues.

Abstract:

Táto magisterská práca sa zameriava na vývoj Slovenského filmového archívu v období medzi rokmi 1958 – 1969 v Bratislave. Skúma, akým spôsobom postupovali archivári pri výbere, uskladňovaní, kategorizácii, zapožičiavaní a reprezentácií diel slovenskej národnej kinematografie a ako sa tieto nimi vytvorené pracovné metódy a praktiky ustálili. Pri výskume som aplikovala dva teoretické prístupy: koncept strážcu a koncept národnej kinematografie. Tieto koncepty sa vzájomné prelínajú a dopĺňajú vo vnímaní filmového archívu ako miesta, ktoré potvrdzuje existenciu slovenskej národnej kinematografie. V prostredí Slovenského filmového archívu sa o národnej kinematografii pojednávalo a rozhodovalo na základe skúseností a znalostí samotných archivárov, ktorí ovládali najdôležitejšie technologické, odborné a výskumné znalosti o filmovej problematike.
