StarDance as a Global Television Format: a Comparative Analysis of the Czech and British Versions of the Program Focused on Glocalization and Cultural Hybridization Phenomena

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá domestikací globálních televizních formátů v konkrétním kulturním prostředí. Představuje případovou studii televizního formátu Strictly Come Dancing, jež byl pod názvem StarDance… Když hvězdy tančí importován do českého prostředí. Cílem práce je vysledovat, nakolik národní vysilatel pořad přibližuje českému kulturnímu prostředí a jakým způsobem zde pracuje s kulturními a národními reprezentacemi. Práce vychází z teoretických konceptů glokalizace, kulturní hybridizace a banálního nacionalismu. Pomocí komparativní analýzy české a britské verze pořadu se práce pokouší odpovědět na otázku, zda se lokální verze pořadu StarDance diferencuje od britského předobrazu a případně jakých mechanismů využívá pro ukotvení formátu do vlastního kulturního prostředí. V práci je využívána metoda interpretativního čtení s prvky sémiotické analýzy a strukturální analýza. Práce dochází k závěru, že i přes některá přiblížení lokálnímu prostředí, čeští tvůrci přebírají strukturu pořadu i s jeho image a přiblížení českým kulturním hodnotám je realizováno jen do velmi nízké míry. V pořadu StarDance tak převládla tendence napodobit světové schéma televizních show namísto vytvoření svébytného kulturního produktu odpovídajícího českému prostředí.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with domestication of global television formats in a specific cultural environment. It presents a case study of the Strictly Come Dancing television format that was imported to the Czech environment under the title StarDance... When the stars dance. The aim of our work is to trace how much the national broadcasters modify the program to fit it into the Czech cultural environment and how they work with cultural and national representations. The work is based on theoretical concepts of glocalization, cultural hybridization and banal nationalism. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the British and Czech version of the program, the work attempts to answer the question whether the local version StarDance differentiates from British amenable and what mechanisms are eventually used to anchor the format into its own cultural environment. The analysis uses the methods of the structural analysis and the interpretative reading with elements of semiotic analysis. The thesis concludes that Czech producers take over the structure of the show including its image and that the local cultural values are therefore implemented only to a very small extent. The prevailing tendency in the StarDance program is to imitate the global scheme of the television show instead of creation of a distinctive cultural product corresponding to the Czech environment.
