Grain size analysis of lateral gravel bars of the renaturalised reaches along the Bečva River

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis studies river sediment of ten chosen gravel bars, which are located on the Bečva River (from junction of the Vsetínská and the Rožnovská Bečva Rivers to mouth of the Bečva River to the Morava River). It analyzes changes of grain size within lateral bars, in one case central bar and it also compares differences in grain size among bars along the river. Two methods were chosen for gaining data of grain size: hand measurement of particles (grid count) and processing of digital photographs from gravel bars in software Digital Gravelometer (photo-granulometry). As a result of their comparison, photo-granulometry defines smaller grain size of fine grained clasts fraction, whereas coarse grained clasts reaches bigger values of axis b as grid count. According to results from photographs, grain size of clasts decreases downstream; within the bar there is also a decrease of grain size from head to tail of bar. However, the data from grid count have not approved it. The thesis focuses also on difference between armor and subarmor layers (armoring) on the bars. According to data from grid count the bars which are located near the junction have more developed armoring and the armoring decreases downstream. The improving trend of sorting along the river is related to this decrease - according to data from photo-granulometry when distance increases downstream, more and more clasts have the same size within one sample. During the field mapping the coarse grained sediment was found on the top of bars. The analysis shows that the size of grain median is not dependent on the height above the river bed. However, percentile 0,95 is dependent on the height above the river bed but this dependency is moderate, statistically non-significant. The information from this thesis can be further used for analyzing grain size distribution on other gravel-bed rivers, comparing photo-granulometry and grid count or comparing changes in grain size on the Bečva River after couple of years.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca študuje riečne naplaveniny vybraných desiatich štrkových lavíc, ktoré sú rozmiestnené na Spojenej Bečve (od sútoku Vsetínskej a Rožnovskej Bečvy až po ústie Bečvy do Moravy). Venuje sa hlavne analýze zmien veľkosti sedimentov v rámci laterálnych lavíc, v jednom prípade stredovej lavice, ako aj porovnaniu veľkostných rozdielov medzi lavicami v smere prúdu rieky. Pre získanie dát veľkosti sedimentov boli zvolené dve metódy: ručné meranie častíc (grid count) a spracovanie digitálnych fotografií zo štrkových lavíc v softwari Digital Gravelometer (fotogranulometria). Z ich porovnania vyplynulo, že fotogranulometria určuje menšiu zrnitosť frakcie jemnozrnných klastov, zatiaľ čo frakcii hrubozrnnejších klastov vyhodnocuje väčšie hodnoty b osi ako grid count. Podľa výsledkov z fotografií sa so zväčšujúcou sa vzdialenosťou zmenšuje zrnitosť častíc, podobne i v rámci lavice dochádza k zmenšovaniu zŕn od čela po zadnú časť. Dáta z ručného merania to ale nepotvrdili. Táto práca si všíma aj rozdiel medzi krycou vrstvou a substrátom (armoring) na laviciach. Z ručne meraných dát vyplýva, že na laviciach vyššie po prúde je armoring väčšmi rozvinutý a po prúde sa zmenšuje. Súvisí s tým aj zlepšujúci sa trend vytriedenia pozdĺž toku – podľa dát z fotogranulometrie má so zväčšujúcou sa vzdialenosťou viac zŕn v rámci jednej vzorky rovnakú veľkosť. Na laviciach bolo ďalej zistené, že aj na najvyššie položených lokalitách bol prítomný hrubozrnný materiál. Veľkosť mediánu zŕn teda nezávisí od výšky nad dnom, percentil 0,95 vykazoval miernu, štatisticky nevýznamnú závislosť na výške nad dnom. Informácie z tejto práce môžu byť ďalej využité pri zrnitostnej analýze iných štrkonosných tokov, pri porovnávaní metód fotogranulometrie a grid countu, ako aj pri porovnaní zrnitostných zmien na rieke Bečve po niekoľkých rokoch.
