New York vs. Los Angeles: A Comparison of Exhibition Dramaturgy and Curatorial Approaches to Contemporary Art during the Years 2018 to 2023

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the criteria analysis of the organizational structure of selected contemporary art institutions in New York and Los Angeles, emphasizing the representation of high institutional art and the independent art scene. In virtue of the comparison of their activities between 2018 and 2023, the thesis clarifies the parallels and contrasts in the leadership policy and curatorial approaches of the East and West Coasts of global cities in the United States with regard to their impact within the international society. Consequently, the results are applied to questions related to the opinion that organizations hold at the current time of geo-political conflicts through an exhibition concept presented to the public.

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá analýzou kritérií organizačnej štruktúry vybraných umeleckých inštitúcií súčasného umenia v New Yorku a Los Angeles, s dôrazom na reprezentáciu vysokého inštitucionálneho umenia a nezávislej umeleckej scény. Prostredníctvom komparácie ich činnosti medzi rokmi 2018 až 2023, objasňuje paralely a kontrasty v politike vedenia a kurátorských prístupoch oblastí globálnych miest východného a západného pobrežia Spojených štátov, s ohľadom na ich dosahy v rámci medzinárodnej spoločnosti. Výsledky sú následne aplikované na otázky spojené s názorovým stanoviskom, ktoré organizácie zastávajú v aktuálnom čase geopolitických konfliktov skrze výstavnú koncepciu prezentovanú verejnosti.
