Constructing the World in Action: Mind, Intelligence, and Rationality in the Philosophy of George H. Mead.

Abstract:

Předmětem práce je prezentace a analýza naturalistické filozofie jednání George H. Meada a její následná aplikace na rozdílné filozofické problémy jako například problém poznání, sebe-vědomí, reflektivní inteligence, sociálního konstrukcionismu a/nebo filozofie dějin. Na rozdíl od jiných výkladů Meadova díla (které se zabývají téměř výhradně jeho sociálními koncepcemi), pojímá předložená práce Meada jako filozofa a teoretika jednání, jehož teorie lze efektivně aplikovat na výše zmíněné filozofické problémy. Jako ústřední téma práce však lze označit problém epistemologického konstrukcionismu. V tomto ohledu je v práci hlavním argumentem autora tvrzení, že konstrukce našeho přirozeného světa se neodehrává "v našich hlavách", nýbrž v praktickém jednání a aktivním zapojování environmentálních struktur do našich účelově zaměřených aktivit. Práce je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První z nich se zabývá východisky Meadovy teorie aktu, jakož i pokusem o uvedení těchto koncepcí do konstruktivní diskuse s proudy filozofie mysli a kognitivních věd souhrnně nazývanými "situovaná kognice" (Andy Clark, Daniel D. Hutto, Mark Johnson, Humberto Maturana, Alva Noë, Mark Rowlands, Evan Thompson a další). V kapitole druhé se autor věnuje genezi a analýze Meadovy koncepce významového symbolu, (sebe-)vědomí a komunikace. V kapitole třetí naopak ukazuje místo těchto teorií v Meadově sociální psychologii, morální filozofii a filozofii dějin.

Abstract:

The thesis undertakes the project of presenting the philosophy of George Herbert Mead from a perspective which is different from those analyzing his work primarily within the framework of social sciences. As the title indicates, its focal point lies in the analysis of Mead’s naturalistic notion of action and its subsequent application to various philosophical problems including the nature of self-consciousness, reflective intelligence, social constructionism, and (for instance) philosophy of history. As opposed to traditional renditions of Mead's work (dealing almost exclusively with his social theory), this thesis depicts Mead first and foremost as a philosopher of action, whose theories can be effectively applied to the aforementioned philosophical problems. The central issue of the thesis is, however, the problem of epistemological constructionism. In that respect, the author's main claim is that the construction of our lifeworld does not take place "in our heads" (as vast majority of the philosophical tradition would have it) but in practical human action by means of direct enactions of environmental structures into our goal-directed, embodied activities. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first one deals with the conceptual background of Mead's theory of the act and, subsequently, introduces it into a constructive debate with certain contemporary approaches to philosophy of mind and cognitive science, often referred to as "situated cognition" (Andy Clark, Daniel D. Hutto, Mark Johnson, Humberto Maturana, Alva Noë, Mark Rowlands, Evan Thompson, etc.). The second chapter covers the genesis and subsequent analysis of Mead's theories of signification, (self-)consciousness, and communication. The last chapter, in turn, places those theories in a broader landscape of Mead's social psychology, moral philosophy, and philosophy of history.
