How do climbers experience fear: Interpretative phenomenological analysis of climbers' fear and coping strategies during climbing and in common life

Abstract:

The aim of the present undergraduate study is to qualitatively assess the experience of fear during climbing. The data was collected utilising a series of semi-structured interviews with four experienced climbers. It was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Using this approach, six common themes were identified: The tendency to overcome fear, Positive and negative influence of fear during climbing, Fear and feeling good due to climbing, Risk management, Fear and perceived control and lastly Fear during a climb and real life. Based on the collected data it can be surmised that climbers tend to perceive fear as a challenge. It is experienced as a negative influence when it becomes dominating, however it does provide climbers with important information about potential danger and stimulates them to perform at a more heightened state. The feeling of fear can often be accompanied by a pleasant sensation during a climb. Climbers do not expose themselves to risk accidentally, rather they base their exposure on their skills and capabilities. These skills are a result of the personal characteristics of the climber and regular exposure to situations with increasing risk. These results are consistent with theories that explain perilous behaviour of athletes with high self-efficacy. These findings help us better understand the behaviour of climbers that participate in more hazardous forms of this sport.

Abstract:

Táto kvalitatívna bakalárska práca si kládla za cieľ zistiť, aká je skúsenosť so strachom pri lezení. Dáta boli získavané prostredníctvom pološtrukturovaných rozhovorov so štyrmi skúsenými lezcami. Rozhovory boli analyzované pomocou interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy. Pomocou analýzy sa podarilo identifi-kovať šesť spoločných tém: Tendencia prekonávať strach, Pozitívny a negatívny vplyv strachu pri lezení, Strach a dobrý pocit z lezenia, Riadenie rizika, Strach a vnímaná kontrola a Strach pri lezení a reálny život. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že lezci majú tendenciu vnímať strach ako výzvu. Strach vnímajú negatívne, keď ich ovláda. Zá-roveň im poskytuje dôležitú informáciu o riziku a dokáže ich stimulovať k lepšiemu výkonu. S prežívaním strachu sa spájajú príjemné pocity pri lezení. Lezci sa nevystavujú riziku náhodne, ale na základe odhadu svojich schopností. Nad nebezpečnými situáciami vnímajú kontrolu vďaka dôvere vo svoje schopnosti. Tieto schopnosti sú výsledkom osobných charakteristík lezca a pravidelného vystavovania sa riskantnejším situáciám. Výsledky sú v súlade s teóriami, ktoré vysvetľujú riskantné správanie športovcov pomocou vy-sokého self-efficacy. Tieto zistenia pomáhajú lepšie pochopiť lezcov, ktorí sa venujú nebezpečnejším formám tohto športu.
