Renaissance skepticism and its role in formation of Early modern thinking

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce je vliv renesančního skepticismu na novověkou filosofii. V první kapitole je charakterizován antický skepticismus: tři zásadní otázky vedoucí k definování skepticismu Pyrrhónem z Élidy (kolem 360-270 př. K.). Stručně je popsáno deset tropů, jejichž prostřednictvím bylo zpochybněno smyslové poznání. V druhé kapitole je nastíněn sociokulturní kontext renesanční Francie. Následuje krátká charakteristika renesančního skepticismu, především problém pravidla víry, které bylo intenzivněji diskutováno v době náboženských sporů. Dále je pozornost věnována hlavnímu představiteli renesančního skepticismu Michelovi de Montaigne (1533-1592). V další podkapitole je sledováno Montaignovo filosofické myšlení. Montaigne nově promýšlel a rozvíjel pyrrhonský skepticismus a došel k závěru, že v lidských schopnostech není možnost rozpoznat jistou a nezpochybnitelnou pravdu a že jediné, na co se člověk může spolehnout, je poznání založené na víře v Boha. Montaigne pomocí skepticismu zradikalizoval fideismus. Jeho filosofické myšlení je sledováno především na základě eseje Apologie Raimunda ze Sabundy. Následně je charakterizován sociokulturní kontext novověké Francie. Samostatná podkapitola je věnována novověkému skepticismu. Dále je pozornost věnována René Descartovi (1596-1650), jeho životopisným datům a scholastické výuce, která významně ovlivnila Descartovo filosofické směřování. Poté je charakterizováno Descartovo filosofické myšlení otázka správné metody, role jasného a rozlišeného poznání a role rozumu na cestě k víře. Skepticismus se ukázal jako živý filosofický směr, oživovaný především v dobách nestability a modifikovaný dle historických okolností.

Abstract:

The main topic of this thesis is the impact of Renaissance skepticism on Early modern philosophy. In the first chapter is described the Ancient scepticism: three principal questions which lead to scepticism defined by Pyrrhon of Elis (c. 360-270 B. C.). There is briefly outlined ten tropes, through which was challenged sense knowledge. In the second chapter is outlined the sociocultural context of Renaissance France. Then there is described the Renaissance scepticism, especially the problem of the rule of faith, which was more discussed at the time of religious disputes. Then there is described life and philosophy of Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). Montaigne developed pyrrhonien scepticism and he came to the conclusion, that a man is not able to recognize certain and undoubtable truth and only faith and God is a guarantee of truthful knowledge. Montaigne radicalized fideism with scepticism. Observation of his philosophical thought is based on the essay Apologie de Raimond Sebond. Then is briefly outlined the sociocultural context of Early modern France and then is outlined Early modern scepticism. In the next section my attention is focused on basic biography of René Descartes (1596-1650) and scholastic education, which had important impact on Descartes´s philosophy. Then there is characterized Descartes´s philosophical thinking question of correct method, the role of clear and distinguished knowledge, the role of ratio on the journey to faith. Scepticism was shown as living issue which was revived primarily by the time of instability and modified according to the historical context.
