Severe convective storm environments in the present and future

Abstract:

Intenzivní bouřky působí velké škody na majetku a ztráty na životech. V rámci Evropy se ví jen málo o podmínkách, v jakých se intenzivní bouřky tvoří a jak se bude jejich frekvence v budoucnu měnit v závislosti na měnícím se klimatu. Předkládaná dizertační práce se snaží o částečné doplnění těchto témat a skládá se z tří hlavních částí (cílů). V první části bylo analyzováno 16 421 sondáží z 32 stanic v regionu střední Evropy mezi prosincem 2007 a prosincem 2013, vypovídajících o podmínkách, ve kterých se tvoří (intenzivní) bouřky. Ke každé sondáži byla přiřazena intenzita doprovodních bouřkových jevů, kterými jsou kroupy, déšť, nárazy větru a tornáda. Pravděpodobnost výskytu jevů jako funkce instability a vertikálního střihu větru je mezi jevy rozdílná. Velké kroupy jsou nejpravděpodobnější v podmínkách výrazné instability a silného střihu větru, což jsou podmínky vhodné i pro silné nárazy větru. Silné nárazy větru vykazují druhotné maximum v pravděpodobnosti výskytu v slabé instabilitě ale velice silném střihu větru. Bouřky se silnými tornády se vyskytují v podmínkách se silnějším střihem větru než bouřky se slabými nebo žádnými tornády ale v podobné míře instability. Vydatný déšť se v bouřkách vyskytuje ve velkém rozsahu střihu větru a je nejpravděpodobnější v podmínkách výrazné absolutní vlhkosti v spodní a výrazné relativní vlhkosti v střední troposféře. Druhá část je zaměřena na posouzení změn výskytu podmínek vhodných pro intenzivní bouřky v budoucnosti na základě ensemblu 14 regionálních klimatických modelů pokrývajících Evropu a Středomoří. Vhodné podmínky zahrnují přítomnost lability, výrazného vertikálního střihu větru a srážek simulovaných modelem. Změny v budoucnosti byly vyjádřeny na základě dvou klimatických scénářů (RCP4.5 a RCP8.5), porovnáním dvou období v budoucnosti (2021 – 2050 a 2071 – 2100) k historickému období (1971 – 2000) pro každý ze scénářů. Ensemble modelů simuluje robustní nárůst počtu instabilních situací v rámci střední a části jižní Evropy pro scénář RCP8.5. Tento nárůst je způsobený zvýšením absolutní vlhkosti v spodní troposféře. Změny v počtu situací se silným střihem větru jsou malé, s výjimkou severní Skandinávie. Do konce staletí simulují modely nárůst počtu instabilních situací se silným střihem větru a srážkami až do 100 % v rámci částí střední a východní Evropy v scénáři RCP8.5 a až do 50 % v scénáři RCP4.5. V ensemblu je přítomna značná mezi-modelová variabilita, která je způsobena primárně neurčitostí ve frekvenci výskytu instabilních situací. Třetí - poslední, část je věnována lokálním pravděpodobnostem výskytu velkých krup, silných nárazů větru a tornád. Pravděpodobnosti byly stanoveny na základě míry instability a vertikálního střihu větru v ensemblu regionálních klimatických modelů. Zatímco se prostorově výskyt maxim pravděpodobnosti mezi jednotlivými jevy neliší, hodnoty pravděpodobností jsou značně rozdílné.

Abstract:

Severe thunderstorms pose a significant threat to life and property, yet in Europe, not much is known about the large-scale environments in which they form and if these environments are going to become more frequent in the future under the changing climate. Aim of this thesis is to partly fill these gaps in the knowledge. It consists of three parts. In the first part, environments of severe and non-severe thunderstorms were analysed using 16 421 proximity soundings from December 2007 to December 2013 taken at 32 Central European stations. The soundings were assigned severity categories for the hazards hail, wind, tornado and rain. The probability of the various hazards as a function of instability and vertical wind shear is quite different for each of the hazards. Large hail is most likely for strong instability and shear, a regime that also supports severe wind events. A second severe wind regime exists for low instability and very strong shear. Storms with significant tornadoes occur with much stronger shear than storms with weak or no tornadoes, but with similar instability. Heavy rain events occur across a wide range of shear and are most likely when both absolute humidity in the boundary layer and relative humidity in the low- to mid-troposphere are high. In the second part, the future occurrence of environmental conditions favourable for severe thunderstorms was assessed in an ensemble of 14 regional climate models covering Europe and the Mediterranean. These conditions include the presence of instability, strong vertical wind shear and the occurrence of precipitation in the models. Two climate scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) were investigated by comparing two future periods (2021 – 2050 and 2071 – 2100) to a historical period (1971 – 2000) for each of these scenarios. The ensemble simulates a robust increase in the occurrence of unstable environments across central and south-central Europe in the RCP8.5 scenario. This can be attributed to an increase in lower tropospheric absolute humidity. Changes in the number of environments with strong shear were found to be small and not robust; except across far northern Europe. By the end of the century, the simultaneous occurrence of instability, strong shear and model precipitation is simulated to increase by up to 100% across central and eastern Europe in RCP8.5 and up to 50% in the RCP4.5 scenario by the end of the century. A large inter-model variability was present in the ensemble and is primarily due to the uncertainties in the frequency of the occurrence of unstable environments. In the third part, local probabilities of occurrence of hail, wind and tornado hazards were investigated. Probabilities were assigned using the degree of instability and vertical wind shear, based on the data from regional climate model ensemble. While the spatial patterns in the probability maxima are similar for all studied phenomena across Europe, values of probability differ significantly.
